I attempted to do a quick scan with MSE. It usually takes a little over 2 minutes to do a "quickie" scan. I checked and it was still running after 5 minutes. I watched and it looked like it was scanning the same files over and over (i.e. Silverlight). What was strange is that it showed a small case letter "c" for the drive being scanned instead of the usual capital C. I manually stopped the scan. Just wanted to know if anyone had any insights into what's going on here.

What version of Windows are you using, Windows 7?

First try rebooting using safe mode and see if the MSE scam will work properly.

If that doesn’t work then let’s try an online scanner such as the following. If it finds any issues then you will be best server by posting in the malware forum. 

 

Make sure to disable bled MSE before running as follows:

 

• Right-click on the MSE icon in the system tray and choose Open.
• Click the Settings tab, then click Real Time Protection.
• Uncheck the box next to "Turn on real time protection".
• Click the "Save changes" button.
• Exit MSE when done.

 

NOTE: You will need to right-click on the your web browser icon and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

 

• Please go to link below and run the scan by clicking "SCAN NOW" under ESET Online Scanner

• Then in the lower left-hand corner of the browser window click on esetonlinescanner.exe, and click Run

• In the new window that appears select the option Accept to accept the Terms of Use (if you get a prompt asking if you want this program to make changes to your computer, select Yes)

• Now in the Computer scan settings window that appears:-

• Make sure that the option Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications is checked

• Now click on Advanced settings and select the following:

○ Enable detection of potentially unsafe applications

○ Enable detection of suspicious applications

○ Scan archives

○ Enable Anti-Stealth Technology

○ and that Clean threats automatically is NOT checked

• Now click on:  Scan

• The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.

• When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically. 

• Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall. 

• Now click on: Finish

• Press Windows key + E > click "This PC" > navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\ESET\ESET Online Scanner

• Double-click the "log.txt" file, and copy/paste that log as a reply to this topic

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Thank you for your detailed reply. I have Windows 7 - 64 bit OS. This procedure is a little complicated for an old lady to follow. After reading through it, I was confused about that "Windows key" mentioned - my keyboard doesn't have that.

The Windows key is normally the third key, bottom row to the left, see if this helps.

Just did my weekly quick scan. It completed normally, but still took more time than it used to, but only about a minute longer. If I run into a huge problem in the future, I may have to resort to doing the ESET scan. Thanks for the suggestion.
