I very often have to work with Excel of different versions, but this is the problem I face for the first time, so I hope for your help. Recently, I had to send important calculations to my engineer. But I could not do it because of a serious failure in the system. When I tried to open the file again, there was an error - Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. I tried to open the same file through another PC, but the problem did not resolve, it seems, the file is corrupted. If I can not restore the file before it is noticed at work, I will have problems.

A corrupt excel spreadsheet can be repaired by using Open and Repair technique. It is a built-in repair function that opens a corrupt excel file forcefully.
1. Open MS Excel > press Ctrl+O > locate corrupt excel spreadsheet and select it.
2. Click on the arrow shown beside Open button > select Open and Repair.
It will take just a few seconds to be completed and selected file will be opened, if possible.

Or if you don't know where to find microsoft xls repair tool take a look at

I would suggest checking this page. You may find a solution here. Do not have very high hopes that you will fix it... (yes, I have a bad experience with Excel)

Well, there are many solutions that works for you to repair corrupted Excel workbook that you can try one by one like

  • Run open and repair tool
  • Save the Excel file to another location and try opening the Excel file
  • Set the automatic calculation to manual as the workbook won’t be recalculated and may open.
  • Revert the workbook to last saved version
  • Try running the Microsoft office Tools
  • Or if nothing works then make use of the third party tool to repair and recover corrupt Excel file data.
