Advice please re a new  PC monitor for a 97 year old friend with impaired vision.

 

Currently she uses a seven year old Compaq Presario PC (Model S42010NX) with W98; and a 21"(diag.) monitor -- for email and occasional googling and almost nothing else. No audio, no games, no facebook, no tweets, not even writing text. The dated OS and the speed of the pc are perfectly adequate for her and she certainly wants to avoid having to learn new procedures. But she could benefit from a larger monitor.

 

Can I connect a larger (say a 32" diagonal) monitor to the PC? What is the largest monitor the PC can take?

The size of the monitor is not the issue, it is the interface and the native resolution. Using a resolution other than the native resolution can result in an image which is not the best. You would have to check to see what the video board can output as a resolution.

 

In general, if the connector matches, you should be able to use it, especially with newer monitors.

Kemasa: Thanks.  I would like to avoid buying a monitor, hauling it home, connecting it and then having to return it for a different size andhave to  repeat the process. What data/information do I have to collect on the PC to determinein advance whether a particular 32" monitor (or a larger one) will be compatible? I kind of doubt that I can relyI on a Best Buy salesperson to make the right selection? ..... batpark

You need to see what the output of the computer is and the input for the monitor is.

 

Do you know what the output connector is from the computer?

 

Do you have a TV with the same type of input? You can use a modern TV as a computer monitor, which I am doing as it is cheaper and can be used for multiple purposes.
