I have a ongoing problem for over 6 months. All my Word documents open as Read Only. I have to save the file under another name in order to be able to keep any changes. When I uncheck in their containing folder the Properties / Attributes / Read Only feature, the files appear without Read Only and I can then make changes. However, for some reason, after a certain amount of time (even after only a few minutes, after saving and closing once), all my Word files keep becoming Read Only again, day after day, after day.

Also, there’s a problem with the Normal.dotm folder, it keeps asking me if I want to save the changes made to Normal.dotm, each time I close the last open of the Word documents. I can never save the changes, so I have to click Cancel each time, in order to be able to close the Word program. This problem happens most of the times, but somehow not each time I make modifications in a Word file.

What could be the issue? It is extremely annoying and has been going on for a very long time. In the past, I tried the Microsoft suggestions regarding fixing Normal.dotm issues, but they didn't work:

https://support.micr...-or-normal-dotm

In Developer - Macros section, the only macro for normal.dotm appears to be called "latex2word.ConvertDoc"

Thank you for looking into this.

Hi,

Make sure you Word isn't configured to save the documents as Read-only

No, there is nothing selected in Restrict editing.

This is the message that comes with the error, when I close a word file:

"Changes have been made that affect the global template. Do you want to save those changes?"

Under the prompt I receive this explanation:

This error is commonly encountered when a read lock is set on the file that you are attempting to open. Possible reasons for this:
Another user has the file open, either on the same computer that you are using, or on another computer.
Word crashed at some point in the past and left a read lock on the file.
Another application has an exclusive lock on the file, preventing Word from opening the file.
A custom application is running and has opened this file (possibly on another user's computer). It may have opened the file using an incorrect method.
To correct this problem, close all applications, restart Word and try to open this file again. If this does not work, examine the properties of the file to determine if someone else has it open. Occasionally a phantom process (dead or disassociated program) may have a lock on the file, and the only means of clearing it is to restart your computer.
For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 918593.
