Win 7 loads but then hangs with rollinging doughnut (Resolved).

Couple of things of note in Speccy, one that will be causing you issues of some sort and both leaving your computer open to potential compromise; Windows has not been updated since 01/12/2017... Go to the full post »

Win 7 64 bit.  Computer was working fine.

 

Whilst trying to resolve a problem that Rogue Killer identified I have hit another snag.  

 

When I load windows gets to the start menu, if I click on anything for example 'mail' end with the rolling doughnut and nothing happens.

 

I reloaded windows on a spare drive, used Acronis to restore the back up, tried again but after one restart the same happened.

 

My partition with Win 10 on is fine (using this to contact you).

 

At a loss as to  what could be causing it to hang.

 

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Hello george01,

 

Could be a problem with the partition that Windows 7 is installed on.

 

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s. 

 

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

 

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Currently running on 'C'. I reloaded win7 and loaded backup from acronis on the Kingston drive. 

 

I believe the corrupt drive is 'E'.

Can you try again withe the Speccy link please George.

 

I believe the corrupt drive is 'E'.

 

 

Windows by default normally allocates the drive letter C: to the drive/partition from which it boots and if there are multiple storage devices and dual booting involved when trouble shooting it is advisable to disconnect all but the suspect drive/s from the motherboard, makes any troubleshooting easier with only the one drive hooked up.

rebooted and the corrupt disk is 'D' which has a partition of  100GB

e has win 10 on it. d has win 7.

Couple of things of note in Speccy, one that will be causing you issues of some sort and both leaving your computer open to potential compromise;

 

Windows has not been updated since 01/12/2017 almost four months ago, this puts you at risk of malware attack every time that you go online.

 

You have two AV programs installed, this will cause conflicts and can leave you unprotected if they cancel each other out, MBAM may be shown to be disabled but you will note that it is also up to date, this means that at some time from boot both AVs have been running and possibly causing you the problems that you mention.

 

Display Name: Kaspersky Internet Security
Antivirus
Kaspersky Internet Security
Antivirus: Enabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date
Malwarebytes
Antivirus: Disabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date
 
As a starting point one of the AVs needs to be uninstalled and Windows gotten fully up to date.
 
If any AV product that you have is a paid for version you should always make sure that you have a copy of the product key kept somewhere safe just in case you ever wish to reinstall it.

Malwarebytes Cleanup Utility here

 

NB: Rule of thumb for the required storage capacity of a storage drive from Windows 7 onwards, 256GB minimum just for Windows and possibly one or two of your most played games.

Eventually deleted mbam and now checking for win updates. How auto update became corrupted no idea.

Possibly not corrupted but disabled somehow, this would depend on what the settings were.

 

Working today so may not be able to check back until this evening UK time.

Corrected auto updater and got rid of Malwarebytes using their uninstall tool.

Faulty disk did still not work properly, but as I had reloaded win7 and used acronis back up got everything back to normal on spare disk.

So at the moment things are ok. Have backed up everything again.

Deleted the faulty partition.

 

Hopefully everything will work ok.

NB: You mention a faulty disk, can I ask in what way it was faulty and would you like us to help you to check the disk.

By faulty I meant that it was causing the problem. I should have said partition as well as the disk is partitioned. The partition is fine as I deleted the win7OS  that was not working and have allocated the space to holding the photos taking them out of the partition with Win7 on it that I reloaded (make sense)?
