Alright, so this started happening about a year ago and it's driving me insane. Most of the time when my computer is coming out of sleep mode or being powered up, the screen just won't light up. When connected to a monitor, the monitor works and is detected as the PC screen. However, if I just keep turning the computer off and back on, the screen will eventually start working again. But sometimes when the screen is working and then I connect it to a monitor, the screen will just stop with the monitor still working... but only sometimes. Others times it works as intended. Everytime it turns on I get the notification error "Communication error, tray won't start," or something to that effect. Also, for whatever reason, when it does come out of sleep mode successfully, it will be in 600x800 resolution. I've gone through and I'm 100% positive every single driver even slightly related to graphics has been updated. The only option given for hertz is 60 so it can't be anything related to that, unless the computer just isn't giving me the option. I DON'T UNDERSTAND NOTHING MAKES SENSE SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME OUT OF THIS MADNESS. And also, once the laptop screen is on it will stay on no matter what until it's closed or turned off, so it's not a hardware issue. Or it is... I am very confused. I really am not sure if this is even the right forum to post this on lol.

It is a Toshiba Satellite with a Core i7-5500 processor and 12 GB of ram running Windows 10.

I'm using the most basic Windows 10 64 bit for home use, it is fully updated. And safe mode will sometimes work and sometimes not... just like the PC itself

Are you getting full crashes with blue screen errors? If so, please do the following to copy the m8nidump files to your desktop. Also I recommend testing your hard drive with either the mfg utility or seatools. Make sure to run the long test.

Click on Start menu
Type in command
Right click on Command Prompt in list and select Run as Administrator
Copy and Paste the following command into the command console
Compress the files to .zip and upload to your reply

copy %SystemRoot%\minidump\*.dmp "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\"

No, the computer itself isn't crashing at all... it is still fully functional. It's just that it sometimes won't show up on the display. And I'll test the hard drive in a second and report with the results. Also, the command doesn't seem to be working.

Also, completely forgot to mention this but I followed Paws suggestion and I no longer receive the tray failing to start... but it didn't fix the screen issue so I guess it was unrelated.

If the problem were caused by an intermittent poor connection in the cable going to the display, where would an error code be set? Am I correct in assuming that possibility has been ruled out?

It sounds to me then that it related to a loose connection or bad hardware. Do you have another monitor or tv that you can hook up to and test?

Also, the command doesn't seem to be working.

That just means you did not have any minidump files. There are few things in your logs that can be cleaned up but let’s see if we can figure out this issue first.

When I connect the laptop to a monitor or TV with an HDMI cable it works normally... but I do not have another laptop screen I could test it with if that's what you're asking

I honestly have no idea, I can't say for certain that anything is 100% ruled out at this point.

The hard drive long generic test says that it passed, so the hard drive seems to be good.
