I have an Asus A54 with about 200GB of data on the Hidden, C and D drives. I have a Seagate 2TB portable drive which is 40% full onto which I wanted to put a clone of the computer disc before modifying the partition sizes; most of the portable drive's current data is for backup, and over 1TB is free (and apparently continuous, never have been used). This portable drive is not normally connected, but was for this operation.

 

When I open EaseUs Free, select Clone, then disc 0 to be cloned and the HDD as target, it displays the two lines depicting the two drives and their data, the 'to copy' above the 'to receive' line. Clicking Proceed gives a message indicating data will be overwritten, implying that, rather than using the empty area to the right of the HDD, EaseUs will start copying to the beginning of the HHD.  Is this its normal procedure? Can it somehow be 'ordered' to clone only to an empty area, or do I need to partition the HDD and then choose an empty partition within it?

 

Seems strange that the program wouldn't be designed to do better, or at least that the EaseUs tutorials wouldn't explain/warn about this and how to avoid the overwriting.

 

Can anyone offer any useful comments, suggestions or explanations about this behavior?

What you need to do is create a backup image not a clone. The first creates a backup to several big files that can be saved on a folder on the 2TB portable without affecting the other data on the drive.

I understand that and already have multiple backup images, etc. (using EaseUs) on the first 40% of the HDD. For a change I wanted a clone because it picks up everything including the layout details; it makes an exact copy. A description of the differences are shown Here.

 

The question is still that if I'm cloning a 320GB drive onto the HDD with 1TB of free space, shouldn't the program be designed so it can find and use just the empty space on the destination drive? BTW, have you ever seen the quality of the EaseUs translations? Somebody could really help with their English.

 

I may try creating a partition to the HDD's back end and select it as the destination for the clone, assuming that's possible.

The image backup includes everything including the layout. When doing a clone operation its usually possible to do a sector by sector copy but that is not the default, is only needed for special cases for example to recover data form a bad HDD...

That will mess things, there is a limit on the number of partitions, the position and order of the partitions must be kept, etc...

 

Newer versions of Windows create several partitions that are needed for the Operating System to work properly all of them must be include on the image backup or clone.

An image is a file of the exact contents of the drive. It is used to put the original drive back to the day you made the image.

A clone is an exact copy of the drive to another drive. It is used to make an exact copy of 1 drive to another drive so you can just swap the drive into the computer. That is why it starts in the beginning.
