recently i opened my laptop for cleaning purpose , after cleaning when i reassmbled the laptop i could see that the fan rotates for a split second when i press the power button but then goes off and does not run at all. the laptop boots smoothly but gets off due to over heating after10-15 minutes.  can any one please suggest whats the problem and how to get through it.

btw my laptop model is

acer aspire 5745G

Cooling fan failure or a loose cooling fan power supply are two things that would cause such behaviour, would strongly advise that for now you do not power up the notebook  as you risk frying the CPU.

 

Was the cooling fan and heatsink assembly removed as part of the cleaning.

yes i removed the cooling fan and the heat sink assembly, but yes did not apply any thermal paste freshly, is it causing any affect ?

If the heatsink was removed the old thermal compound has to be properly cleaned off using an an appropriate cleaner such as 99% pure alcohol and a fresh amount of thermal compound then correctly reapplied, not doing so would not explain why the fan is stopping spinning but it would explain the notebook shutting down at some point due to the CPU overheating, this would still happen even if the cooling fan was spinning.

It is frying your processor and if not corrected the CPU will burn up.

i can completely understand the cosequences of running the laptop without apllying the thermal compund freshly.

i am not going to turn it on before apllying thermal paste but even then, if the fan just gets on for a split second only, the cpu is gonna heated up significantly and will end up shuting down the system as happening righ now, right!

 

so what would be your sugestion for me to troubleshoot the entire situation

yes it is fully reassembled

It is going to have to be disassembled to sort out the thermal compound in any event but was hoping that you would be able to quickly check that the CPU fan was securely connected to the power header on the motherboard.

 

Once you have dismantled the notebook you should test the fan, do you have or can you obtain a spare USB cable that is no longer needed, if yes, see the video here for how to test the fan using a USB cable.

i have to dismentle completely to reach to the cpu fan jack... so i m thinking to aplly the thermal cpmpound and test the fan altogether
