I have two computers, TV and Voip telephone hard wire connected to a Verizon FIOS modem/router.  I had a problem with one computer and contacted MS help for help.  I allowed the tech access to my computer and he solved the problem (we had to reload Firefox), but in doing something else, the computer shut down and when I booted it up, I had no internet connection.  The other computer is working fine.

The machine without internet is running Windows 10  -  I believe it is up-to-date.  I tried the internet troubleshooting; it failed.

Since I am not super computer savvy and since I have to use the second computer to get help and then move to the computer without internet to try various fixes, please provide whatever help you can with as explicit instructions as possible.

Thanks

Hi,

You will have to download the tools to a USB flash drive on a working computer and run them on the problematic machine.

Save all files to the Flash Drive.

» Minitoolbox log
Run Minitoolbox from the Flash Drive and check the following options:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Devices (Only Problems)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
  • List Minidump Files
  • List Restore Points

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

» Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) log
Let's check some windows critical services...

  • Run FSS from the Flash Drive
  • Check all the options
  • click Scan

Post the generated log in your reply.

Sleepy Dude,

Thanks for the help.

I was out until a few minutes ago.  I downloaded the two .exe files and transferred them to a flash drive.  I will run them on the disabled computer (hereafter called Com1) tomorrow morning.

Jim

Hi,

I see several problems! lets see if we can fix them.

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable

  • Important: Restart the COMP1 in Safe Mode https://support.micr...pc-in-safe-mode
  • transfer the file to the COMP1 and extract the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
  • execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, accept the Security warning and the EULA
  • click the button Jump To Repairs
  • click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:
    WindowsRepair.png
  • click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the box's
  • check only the following box's:
    • 01 - Reset Registry Permissions
    • 02 - Reset File Permissions
    • 03 - Reset Service Permissions
    • 04 - Register System Files
    • 05 - Repair WMI
    • 10 - Remove Policies Set By Infections
    • 13 - Repair Network
    • 18 - Repair Volume Shadow Copy Service
    • 25 - Restore Important Windows Services
    • 26 - Set Windows Services to Default Startup
  • check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System
  • click the Start Repairs button

Edit: After the fix restart the system normally and run the diagnostic tools from post #2 do it with Kaspersky disabled because I'm not sure if it will interfere with the tools readings.

I need to see some changes on the logs but its possible that the Internet access will work immediately because of other problems...

Hi,

In Safe Mode the Antivirus will be disabled by default.

Disable Kaspersky only when running FSS and Minitoolbox.

I can't get into Safe Mode (What was easy in XP and W7, is most difficult in W10).  Of the the two methods in the link you provided, the first is impossible because I don't seem to have the logo key described,

The second method also doesn't work.  The machine skips the sign-in screen and goes directly to my desktop.  Once on my desktop there is no Power button.

When it first starts, four options flash up on the black screen F2, F6, F11 and ???.   It flashes so quickly that I can read only one, F11;  F11  is Boot Menu.   I restarted the computer and hit F11 when the four options flashed but the two options that came up had nothing to do with Troubleshoot or anything else.

Is there a way I can set up the correct options (Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Startup Settings) after I get to my desktop so that I can restart and still get the Safe Mode option?

On the Start Menu you have the shutdown and Restart Option.

Hold the Shift key and click Restart.

Edit: If this doesn't work run the Tweaking tool, on recent versions the program will show a warning to run the tool in Safe Mode and I think it can reboot the system to Safe Mode if you allow it.

SD,

The tweak program did allow me to get into Safe Mode.  After it ran and COM1 restarted I saw no change -- still no internet.  I restarted again - it took 5 min and 22 sec to reboot into my desktop, again it did not stop at the page to "ask" whether I or my wife would "log on" (we do not have passwords -- we just click on our name) but went directly to my desktop.

I ran the initial two programs; the output is here:

Hi,

I was expecting more things corrected...

Please start the machine in Safe Mode again and run the Tweaking tool only with the following options:

  • 25 - Restore Important Windows Services
  • 26 - Set Windows Services to Default Startup

Restart the computer in normal mode an run the FSS tool again. Post the new log.

SD,

Good morning.  I just signed in and will rerun the program as instructed within the next 5 minutes.

COM1 again took 5 min 46 sec to boot up.  I disabled Kaspersky then ran the program and used the Safe Mode link to get into Safe Mode - that boot up took 2min 12sec.   I ran the program from the flash drive, went to Jump to Repair, marked only 25 and 26.  It ran in just a few seconds, then shut down the machine.  A reboot took again over 5 minutes, but there is no output log on the screen or on the flash drive.  If it put it on COM1's hard drive, where would it be?

ps  I also checked and I still do not have internet?

Jim

Hi,

Thanks for the log it explains the results:

25 - Restore Important Windows Services
   Skipping Repair.

26 - Set Windows Services To Default Startup
   Skipping Repair.

The program isn't updated to deal with the Windows 10 version you have, we need to do things differently...

Check Windows System files integrity
- open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
- type the command:

sfc /scannow

Note: This may take some time to finish...

Please report the result of the command.
