I have a gateway fx6800 with an i7-920 CPU, motherboard: tbgm-01. Is it possible to upgrade the CPU to an i7-990x?. I tried and it doesn't startup. The second i7-990x CPU I tried I get a long continuous boot. Thanks.

Info here says that the i7-990x is compatible with the MB that you have.

Does the above mean that you have tried two different 990x CPUs and neither have worked.
