Lost my internet connection....again

Hi all,

I was busy playing an online game this morning, when unexpectedly, I lost my internet connection. Basically, if I hold the cursor over the internet connection icon on the taskbar, it says no internet connection.

Exactly the same thing happened a while ago and I posted the problem here:

http://www.geekstogo...ction-resolved/

On that occasion, it seems likely to me that it was a physical problem with the cables between the computer and the router. I've checked them this time and I can't see any problems.

When I look in device manager, there are no red crosses anywhere, including network adapters.

I tried running the diagnostic in the dos prompt as dmccoy suggested in post number 2 the last time I had a problem, but I can't get the normal dos prompt any more, I've got power shell for some reason, which doesn't accept the ampersand.

Would some please help me out? I'd love to know what's causing this recurring problem.

Regards

Are any of your other devices having a problem getting on the internet? If so, the problem may be your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Hi,

All of the other devices are working as usual, so it's definitely specific to my desktop.

There is an option in Settings, Taskbar which allows you to choose between Command Prompt and Power Shell.

One of the many win 10 upgrades toggled the setting.  Turn it off.

Now that you have a Command Prompt, open an elevated (admin) Command Prompt and type:  ipconfig

Does it say the Ethernet Adapter is disconnected?

If so:

Go to your router and find the connection to your PC.  There is normally a light for each port on a router which lights up when you plug in the cable.  Is it lit?   Unplug the cable from the router.  Light should go out.  Plug it back up.  Does it come on?

If not, try one of the other ports or replace the cable.  Check that the cable is still plugged in to your PC.  There is usually a light that shows up when it is connected.  Sometimes the catch on the connector breaks off and while it will still plug in it will not lock and will eventually fall out.

If not:

It should show an IP address and default gateway.   Does it?

if not type:

ipconfig  /release

Hit Enter.

ipconfig  /renew

Hit Enter.  Report any errors.

If you have an IP address and gateway see if you can ping the gateway  (replace 192.168.0.1 with your gateway address in the following):

ping  192.168.0.1

Hit Enter.  Do you get 4 replies?  If so the connection to the router is good.  Now see if the DNS is working: (this is often the cause of the Internet not connected error)

nslookup  geekstogo.com

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    geekstogo.com
Addresses:  104.28.28.94
          104.28.29.94

If you don't get the above then the DNS is bad.  Type:

ipconfig  /all

Hit Enter and it should show you the DNS address for the connection.  What is it?

See if changing the DNS server will work:

nslookup

Hit Enter

server 8.8.8.8

Hit Enter

geekstogo.com

Hit Enter.  Does it give you the correct answer this time?  If so change the DNS in Network Settings

https://www.windowsc...ings-windows-10

(if not set to automatically get a DNS address then set it to automatically get one.  If already set that way then set it to use a manual DNS.  Put 8.8.8.8 in the first box and 4.2.2.1 in the second.  Verify that ipconfig /all shows the new DNS and that nslookup geekstogo.com gets the correct answers.  Note if you were set to use aurtomatic then something is wrong with your router.  Try resetting it to factory default.)

If you get the above then things look like they are working.  Try

ping 104.28.28.94

If you get 4 replies then the Internet is working.

Hello,

I have an autoconfiguration IPv4 address, but no default gateway.

When I did the release/renew commands, I got the error message: unable to contact your DHCP. Request has timed out

I got 4 failures when I tried to ping the IP address.

It couldn't find geekstogo on the lookup routine.

The DNS servers are fec0:0:0ffff::1%1, fec0:0:0ffff::2%1, and fec0:0:0ffff::3%1

It couldn't find geekstogo when I changed the DNS server.

Hope this is useful

Expect you got an IP address that started with 169.  That's what you get if the DHCP doesn't work.

I assume the ipconfig did not say the media was disconnected.

If other devices can talk then open an elevated Command Prompt again and type:

sc start dhcp

(Does it say it is already running?  If so try:)

netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ipv4 reset reset4.log
netsh int ipv6 reset reset6.log

Reboot

and see if that helped.

Hello,

I tried that, but I still have no internet access.

Yes, you're right, the IP address starts with 169 and it said an instance was already running when I did the dhcp start.

I've just noticed, if I do the ipconfig/all command, IP routing is not enabled and WINS proxy is not enabled. Could this bew part of the problem?

Regards

When Windows cannot find a DHCP server (your router) to get an IP address from, it assigns one that starts with 169.x.x.x so that you could at least be able communicate with computers on your local link.

Does this imply that the problem may be of a physical/cabling nature?

No.  Both should be off.

Find the port on your router that connects to your PC.  Unplug it.  Plug it back up.  Did you see a light go out and come back on?

Find the Ethernet cable on your PC.  Unplug it.  Does the same light go off on the router?  Plug it back up.  Does the light return?

Is there just a cable between the PC and the router?  Or do you perhaps have a pair of extenders that use the power line?

Search for

device manager

hit Enter.

Find Network Adapter and click on the arrow to open it up.  Find the adapter used to connect to your router.  (Ignore the WAN miniport and any that say wireless)  Tell me what it calls it.  Right  click and Delete. (if it asks do not let it remove drivers)  Reboot.  Windows will reinstall it.  Does ipconfig still show 169?

This is odd. The computer is connected to the router via the power supply system using plug adapters.

I took the cable out of the back of the computer and the adapter and exchenged it for another cable.

The internet came back on. I got 46 seconds into a skype call and the internet connection was lost again.

Surely that means it's a physical problem somewhere rather than software/configuration?

I'm going to try a cable direct into the router, see what happens.

I have the same setup and periodically I lose the Internet for brief periods.  I assume something interferes with the signal but in your case it appears the adapters are failing.  Expect connecting directly with a cable will show a better result.  You might look to see if the adapters need a software upgrade.  What make and model are they?

Hi,

They're TP-LINK model TL-PA411....soon to go in the bin!

I think the way ahead is the direct cable connection.

Thank you for your help, much appreciated.

Direct connection is always better but there may be a firmware upgrade:

Dude, I usually reboot my computer. If it doesn't help, I update all the drivers for Wi-fi adapter for LAN. Or in case you have Win 10, it would be a little bit complicated
