I have a Dell Optiplex 360 and GE Secure Digital & Multimedia reader. I've been using this reader to upload photos from digital camera #1 for several years with no problem. I use a SanDisk 2.0 GB card routinely to transfer photos from my camera to my desktop. An E drive appears on my desktop as soon as the card is inserted in the card reader.

 

I now have a second camera with a Transcend 8 GB SIM card that has photos on it from last week's vacation. The card is unlocked just like the 2.0 GB card. When I insert it in the reader device, nothing shows on my desktop to indicate that it has detected the card. How can I get my desktop to read the 8 GB card?

The SD cards above 2Gb are actually a different type of card. You need a card reader which can read those cards, even though they are the same form factor. I have a small card reader which the SD card goes into and then connects with USB.

 

The 2Gb are SD cards, but the 8Gb are SDHC (4-32Gb) and then above 64Gb is SDXC.

Thanks for clarifying that. I was wondering what the deal was. I probably should have gotten a 2nd 2Gb card.

So I've gone on Amazon and found this, which appears to work with SDHC. Am I right?

Yes, that says that it will work with all of the current SD cards, even the bigger ones. 2Gb cards are quite cheap, so you could still do that, but it would be good to have a reader for the larger cards. It is also possible that you can access the data by connecting the camera by a USB cable. I know some cameras can do that, but not sure if all of them can.

Did you try to do it on other card reader? Probably it is an issue with it.

I'm going to try connecting the camera with the SIM card still in it directly to my desktop using the corded device that came with the camera.

FYI: When I connect like this, it will sometimes takes a couple tries before the drive/camera shows up. Not sure why but it works.

Sometimes it can be slow at times. At least it works and that is what counts.
