So my Windows 10 laptop is fairly new and was in great condition but after a security update, it had asked me to reboot the system, not a big deal. But during the boot, the laptop just shut down (the battery was not dead, was plugged in) and now the laptop will not leave system recovery. I have downloaded a Windows image to a USB and tried to boot from it, and the laptop lets me go into BIOS and select the USB to boot from, but then I get a black screen. I have tried a portable CD/DVD drive with a Windows installer disk but nothing has worked. I need this laptop for work and schooling, so if you have any suggestions, I am all ears. I would have done a system restore, but previously the laptop had been a school computer and had system restore disabled. And startup repair does nothing but reboot and fail every time.

Since your problem seems to have been brought on by a corrupt Windows Update and not malware, I am going to move your topic over to the Windows 10 forum so the tech guys can have a look.

1. Click the Windows Key + R, or finding Run in your Start Menu and then type "msconfig" in the Run search box and hit enter.

2. Now navigate to the Boot tab at the top and "untick Safe boot" under Boot options. Click "Apply" and then "OK"

3. Restart your machine to apply the changes and you will now be out of Safe Mode.

Do you see anything on the screen when you boot to the Windows 10 USB or DVD? Do you need files off this computer? Do you have access to another computer if needed to download and create media?

To my mind - reinstall your OS again
