It took some looking but I finally saw that Speccy did provide 'copy to file'. The 'loose connection' was actually a cracked SATA connector guide which was making it difficult to align the connector. Before running the HDD the last time, I took care to make sure that went in correctly and then I got good results. It's certainly more economical to keep it and be aware of the issue than getting a new one.
