Hi everyone,

Thanks for this forum....digitally challenged person here.

I changed my hard drive to an ssd in my laptop and everything works fine except that now I have no sound from my external speakers.

I have sound on my laptop if I unplug the speakers, windows tells me that everything is fine but nothing comes out of my external speakers.

Yes they are on ( green light on) yes they are plugged in properly...didn't even touch the jack as the laptop sits on a docking station.

Lenovo laptop running windows 10 pro.

Any suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks in advance

Phil

Are all the volume control's (hardware and software) turned up?

If so and still nothing, plug the external speakers directly into the laptop. If they work know, there is something wrong with the docking station.

If still no sound though, connect them to another device or two to double-check that they are indeed working.

Let us know what yiou find out ...

Hi, Thanks very much for your reply. As far as I know all the sound levels are turned up. Sound comes from the laptop speakers, no problem. But nothing from the jack on the docking station or the jack on the laptop. I have also tried headphones in the laptop jack, still nothing.

It appears that the problem is the sound not reaching the output jacks on either the laptop or the docking station.

Thanks again for your help...

Phil

1) Have they ever worked?

2) Does the laptop's headphone jack work in Safe Mode?

Hi, Thank you again....Yes they have always worked, in fact I have the speakers plugged in to my tablet right now, listening to some beautiful music.

I have been looking on lenovos site to see if I need any drivers but now am totally confused.

Also I have just made sure all my windows updates are up to date. Interesting to note that on the Microsoft help website someone else has put exactly the same question just today. no replies as yet though.

Still trying...still appreciating any help..Thanks

And I have just tried safe mode...no the headphone jack dosen't work....

You're welcome. It's beginning to sound (no pun intended) like a problem with Windows 10 itself. To test that theory, temporarily boot the laptop from a Live CD/USB and see if the speaker jack works.

A Live CD/DVD or USB flash drive contains a complete bootable computer operating system (OS). When you boot a computer from it, the OS loads into, and then runs from memory instead of a hard drive. This allows you to run an OS without installing it or making any changes to a computer's current configuration.

To create one, download an ISO file containing the OS you want to use, (such as Ubuntu, Slax or Zorin), then use something like ISO Recorder to burn it to a CD/DVD or USB key.

Now boot your computer from this disc/key and your computer will be running that OS instead of the one on its hard drive.

When you're done testing, simply reboot your PC from the hard drive as you normally would.

If the problem persists even when running a different Operating System, then the issue is probably hardware related.

Thanks again for all your suggestions. Unfortunately, they were all a bit beyond me, however, a friend of mine came along and fixed the problem.

The issue was that I installed windows 10 pro while the laptop was OFF the docking station, which meant that windows did not install the correct drivers to drive the output jacks.

Fixed this way.....Uninstall windows 10 generic HD audio drivers.

Have the laptop on docking station with required speakers connected to headphone jack.
Installed the windows 8 driver package from the official lenovo website (Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD).

All fixed now...thanks again for your time, much appreciated...cheers

Ah ha, that's why I'd ask if they worked before. What-ever. Great to hear you're back in business!

Hmmm, it looks like your system has a problem or check the version of drivers of sound card. Last variant plug in speakers to another machine and you'll understand what the problem is
