Hey all, ever since I got my computer up and running again it's been freezing up at random times. Sometimes it won't freeze and sometimes it does freeze. It also seems to freeze up if I leave it idle for too long. It's been doing this since June.

I hope somebody can help me figure out the problem cause it's really been getting annoying when it freezes while I'm in the middle of watching a video or playing games

If the computer is a desktop can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

 1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
 2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
 3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

More than one issue going on but the most pressing is the dangerously low free storage space that you have on both HDDs, the internal WD being the one that is in most danger of either becoming corrupted of failing altogether, either way you could lose all data on the drive/s, see my canned info below;

Hard drives

WDC WD10EZEX-22BN5A0
Partition 1
Partition ID: Disk #0, Partition #1
Disk Letter: C:
File System: NTFS
Volume Serial Number: EE62396F
Size: 930 GB
Used Space: 860 GB (92%)
Free Space: 70 GB (8%)

WD My Passport 0748 USB Device
Status: Good
Partition 0
Partition ID: Disk #1, Partition #0
Disk Letter: G:
File System: NTFS
Volume Serial Number: C0D9D720
Size: 931 GB
Used Space: 886 GB (95%)
Free Space: 45 GB (5%)

For Windows to be able to run efficiently and to be able to update you need to have between 20 and 25% of the partition or drive available as free storage space at all times, if you don`t you risk Windows becoming corrupt or not being able to update which puts you at risk of malware attack. Data only storage devices should not be allowed to get any lower than 10% of free storage space of the full capacity of the drive/partition on the drive.

Uninstall as many unused programs, games, videos and music files as you can and get yourself another means of backing up to, post back when you have between 20 and 25% free storage on the C: drive/partition and we can go from there.

One other suggestion that you can do, this will only take a matter of seconds, disable the less than useless Hibernation setting,

To disable Hibernation:

 1. The first step is to run the command prompt as administrator. In Windows 10, you can do this by right clicking on the start menu and clicking "Command Prompt (Admin)"
 2. Type in "powercfg.exe /h off" without the quotes and press enter. If you typed it in correctly, the cursor will simply start at a new line asking for new input
 3. Now just exit out of command prompt

okay disabled the hibernation setting. as for storage I was actually considering getting a bigger external drive to move my steam games off the internal drive to give more space. meantime I'll uninstall what I can to give more space for the time being.

The C: drive/partition where Windows lives should be your priority, you need to have around the 200GB mark as a minimum.

I was actually considering getting a bigger external drive to move my steam games off the internal drive to give more space.

If me, I would back up my data to the new external HDD, format the present 1TB WD Blue, reinstall Windows 7 but this time create a 250GB partition on the drive just for Windows and your AV, this will give you faster boot up times, make sure that you always have enough storage space for the OS and help to prevent Windows from becoming corrupted by lack of space or any third party program.

okay I'll see what I'm not using and clear the room on my C Drive.

I'll hope to get the external drive I need soon.

Keeping Windows as it is on the present HDD will be ok for now as long as you keep the recommended free storage space.

NB: Some further info on the benefits of having Windows 7 on its own partition in my canned below;

Equally as important is being prepared for the need to upgrade to another OS, Windows 7 is nearing its end of life and extended support will cease on January 14, 2020, when the time comes you will only have to worry about upgrading or clean installing Windows to the C: partition as opposed to needing to reinstall all of your programs and data - if they were kept on a separate partition on the same drive.

Disconnect the USB HDD, free up the space, test then post back with an updated Speccy url for us, we will have to wait until this has been done but no rush on our behalf so post back when you are ready.

Now that you have the space freed up on the HDD it is important that you do not let it drop below what it is now.

also to update, I had three freezes on my pc earlier today.

How long is it since the computer last froze, it would also help if you could tell us what the computer was being used for when it froze and what exactly do you mean by froze, would the mouse cursor not move for example.

I noticed that along with a ton of other rubbish that you have on the HDD** the following, McAfee SiteAdvisor Service, did you ever install this.

** As mentioned above, you have a load of garbage on the HDD that needs to be gotten rid of;

When it freezes the mouse cursor doesn't move, the keyboard also doesn't respond and there's no audio. And when it froze it usually happens if I'm in the middle of playing a game or if I'm watching a video on youtube.

edit: had another freeze earlier, same as before.

edit: as for mcaffee, I think it got included on a adobe flash update. I uninstalled it though.

You never told us how long it had been since the last freeze, please advise.

What you describe above is typical behaviour of overheating.

Download Speedfan and install it.  Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.  The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.

If you are running on a vista machine, please go to where you installed the program and run the program as administrator.

speedfan.png

(this is a screenshot from a vista machine)

So that we have a comparison to Speedfan, download, run and grab a screenshot of HWMonitor (free).

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... Click on the More Reply Options tab then after typing in any response you have... click on Choose File...desktop...find the screenshot..select it and click on Attach This File...on the lower left...after it says upload successful...click on add reply like you normally would.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.
