Hello. I would be very grateful for help with the following. I am running Windows 10 and Microsoft office and suddenly Word, Excel and Outlook wont run (they freeze before opening). All other Programmes and browsers seem to be working though. My antivirus also cant update.

Windows Update is also continually checking for updates but never progresses further than that, even after many hours searching.

Any ideas?

Hello Pat56,

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

  1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
  2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
  3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Hello Pat56,

You have more than one AV on your system.

Windows 10 comes with an improved Windows Defender, it offers the same real-time anti-virus/anti-malware protection as Microsoft Security Essentials so you do not need any third party AV, unless you prefer to use one.

Operating System

Windows 10 Home 64-bit
Computer type: Desktop
Installation Date: 16/05/2018 21:44:28
Windows Security Center
User Account Control (UAC): Enabled
Notify level: 2 - Default
firewall: Enabled
Windows Update
Auto Update: Not configured
Windows Defender
Windows Defender: Disabled
antivirus
Avast antivirus
Antivirus: Enabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date
Windows Defender
Antivirus: Disabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date
Malwarebytes
Antivirus: Enabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date

Having more than one AV installed on your computer is bad, it will slow down the computer, cause internet connection problems and leave you with no AV protection at all if they cancel each other out as they fight for resources.

Uninstall the AV that you do not wish to keep using the info at the links below.

If any AV product that you have is a paid for version you should always make sure that you have a copy of the product key kept somewhere safe just in case you ever wish to reinstall it.

Avast clean removal info here

Malwarebytes Cleanup Utility here

WIll check the rest of your Speccy report now.

You are welcome btw  :)

Edit to add: Not seeing anything else other than Windows being out of date, carry out the above, if you decide to stick with Windows Defender, check that is enabled and able to update, if yes, have it scan the computer then see if Windows can update.

There is also the update troubleshooter to try, see copy/paste info below;

Click the Start menu, then click the cog icon on the left, which will open up the Settings window. Click ‘Update & Security’ then ‘Troubleshoot’. Click on ‘Windows Update’ then ‘Run the troubleshooter’ and follow the instructions, and click ‘Apply this fix’ if the troubleshooter finds a solution.
