Stolen the desktop and will not uninstall correctly. I have tried some of the help threads that have already been posted and they have not helped. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Some of the help files ask you to shut down the C:\windows\system\svchost.exe within the processes, but they do not show the entire link in the process tab and when i go to shut down the 5 svchost.exe proccess teh computer shuts down. My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode, Run Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).

After you're done running Cleanup! follow the instructions below

• Run Ewido.
• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop

Reboot into normal mode.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

SpySheriff

Exit Add or Remove Programs.

Delete the following, in bold, if found:

C:\Program Files\SpySheriff <-whole folder
C:\Windows\Desktop.html
C:\winstall.exe
C:\Program Files\Parallel Tasking<-whole folder
C:\Program Files\PSGuard<-whole folder

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Parallel Tasking] C:\Program Files\Parallel Tasking\ptask.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE


Close HiJackThis.

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and go to Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download the smitfraud reg to your desktop.

Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES. After the merged successfully prompt, please reboot your computer.

You should be able to change your desktop back to normal now.

Navigate to this folder using Windows Explorer:

C:\Windows\Prefetch

Delete ALL files inside of the Prefetch folder (do NOT delete the folder, just the files inside).

Post the report from Ewido and a new HiJackThis log into this topic

i have gotton to the step where i rebot and then am supposed to uninstall teh Spy Sheriff from the Add/Remove Programs, but i do not have a start button or any program icons on my task bar, it is blank all the was to the open programs and time on the far left. i have tried to click around the right side of the task bar but nothing comes up, so i tried to change the resolution and it says "gdiplus.dll was not found". please advise on how to try and fix or show a way to get to the add/remove programs without using the start menu.

i was able to get all the way down to smithfraud.reg, but a window pops up when i launch it, "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." this seems to be a message that pops when you try to do alot of stuff on the computer. then when i minimize it disappears into the tast bar and you can't retrieve a file. thnaks, sggir000

Click on the "My Computer" icon on your Desktop.

When it opens, look on the left hand side of your screen for add/remove programs under the System Tasks heading.

Was there a blue cube-like thing on the screen that you clicked on?

Did it ask you to merge?

If these things were not there, you did not copy/save the info correctly.

yes the smithfraud.reg has a blue cube that breaks apart on top of a paper icon, but it gives you teh "this application failed to start" error message which is what it gives you when you try to launch any programs or try to go into any desktop properties tabs. also there is no start button or quick launch icons on the task bar, only the open process icons on the far right, which are pixilated, and the time. Also the desktop icons are pixilated and teh ctl/alt/delete wont bring up the window which leaves no way that i can think of to shut down the computer, since the start button is also gone, except to take out the battery. if you have any suggestions i would appreciate it, thanks, sggir000

sorry, i had placed a post after the add/remove post to tell you that i figuered that part out and got to the smithfraud.reg part of the instructions where i am having the previous post #6 problems.

I have run out of ideas for the moment. However, I put in an SOS to our resident expert in Smithfraud/Spy Sherriff problems and this expert may be checking in directly with you. Watch for bananafanafo.

I just have a few questions for you. When your reboot into Safe Mode, is your start button still gone?

You have a Windows button on your keyboard (on the bottom left side between "ctrl" and "alt") When you press this windows button does the start menu come up?

When your right-click on your taskbar, is the option for "TaskManager" greyed out?
