Hi,

I have a Samsung laptop and when I turn it on the Optical drive makes a noise that it's turning on, but not the usual reading/turning noises.

When I try to use it, a CD game won't load- 'cannot find disc' and DVD's bring up error messages.

I've uninstalled the drive so it re-installs, cleaned the laser-reader thing and the drive and check that it's listed on my laptop components. I've also done a deep virus/malware scan (Bitdefender)

I did get a blue screen of death about a day or two before this happened which may have some connection...?

Does anyone know what might be the problem or is it just 'RIP' for my drive?

Many, many Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the CD/DVD drive is belly up. :(

How old is the laptop?

What is the make and model number? Might be able to find a replacement for it.

Hi,

Thanks for your help- it is an old laptop (but well looked after) Samsung 350v5c.

It had a blue screen of death around the same time and I can't see any obvious reason for the drive to die.

As I said it does buzz z bit when the Laptop is started, but doesn't try to 'read' any discs (I've tried a few different ones that I know work) which usually happens next.

It could be time to get a new laptop or just the drive, but there do seem to be some simple and free/low-cost ways to restart drives that don't read...

Many Thanks!

Wino

If one of your friends has a USB drive you could try that to rule out a software problem.

But, it does sound like the internal drive has died.
