Just been browsing around my AXEpad and if I click on 'View' > 'Options' > 'Port'

It shows COM 3.

 

And device Manager shows I have three ports available.

 

AXE027 PICAXE USB (COM 3)

Communications Port (COM 1)

ECP Printer Port (LPT1)

 

But there are 16 ports.  The rest are flagged as 'Not Available'.

 

How do I make these ports available ?

 

It is an XP machine. that has six physical USB ports, one Serial Port and one Printer port.

If I'm remembering correctly, to make old COM (serial) and LPT (parallel) ports available you had to attach something to them. Windows can recognize up to 16 of these ports.

So, assume I have the one physical D9 socket, and want to use four different Serial devices (individually). How do I assign the COM (x) to each one ?

You need to install an adapter card with three more serial ports.

Note that multiple serial ports cannot share the same COM port number.

To change the COM port number of a serial device in Device Manager, complete the following:

• Open Device Manager by pressing the [winkey][R], type devmgmt.msc and press [Enter]
• Expand the Ports (COM & LPT) section
• Right-click the COM port and select "Properties"
• Click the "Port Settings" tab and click "Advanced".
• Change the COM port number to an available COM port number.
• Restart your computer so the change(s) can take effect

Note: Even if you change the COM port number back to the original number, you still need to restart your computer.
