I've run AVG, Cleanup!, Ad-Aware, CWShredder, and Spy-Bot. Each time I re-boot I get a new version of Spy Sherriff. How nice of them to think of me. Here is my hijack this log:

First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode, Run Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).

After you're done running Cleanup! follow the instructions below
  • Run Ewido.
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Reboot into normal mode.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

SpySheriff

Exit Add or Remove Programs.

Delete the following, in bold, if found:

C:\Program Files\SpySheriff <-whole folder
C:\Windows\Desktop.html
C:\winstall.exe

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: NaviHelperObj Class - {3E422F49-1566-40D3-B43D-077EF739AC32} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\NaviHelper.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe

Close HiJackThis.

Set PC to show hidden files (click link if you do not know how)LINK

Using windows explorer, locate and delete the following files if found:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\NaviHelper.dll
C:\winstall.exe
C:\Program Files\Alias\Maya6.5\docs\jre\bin\java.exe

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and go to Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download the smitfraud reg to your desktop.

Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES. After the merged successfully prompt, please reboot your computer.

You should be able to change your desktop back to normal now.

Navigate to this folder using Windows Explorer:

C:\Windows\Prefetch

Delete ALL files inside of the Prefetch folder (do NOT delete the folder, just the files inside).

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post the report from Ewido, panda and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

It appeared to be fine after the first batch of deletions, but then when I began to search for the latest file you wanted deleted it went blue. I check the properties and it still said "modified theme". I forced it into classic mode and then added back my adjusted background and it came back. Am I ok, or is this house clean? Thanks for all the help so far.

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

This house is clean! ;) Thanks for all your help to get me out of this sticky one.

I am actually a subscribing member to most of the services and practices you listed, but admittedly I have been a little lax on my weekly Ad-aware and Spy-bot usage, and I guess it only takes a little laziness to let them in the back door. The only thing I don't practice as of yet is running one of the Spyware blockers you listed. Do you reccomend all of them or is it a just pick one situation? Which do you reccommend if that is the case?

Thanks for the help again. I like getting such great service, but hopefully I won't have to visit you guys anytime soon. :tazz:

All of the antispyware can be run in conjunction with each other, the only thing that is important is that you only 1 antivirus and 1 firewall running.
