so heres the deal, ill even break it down into a flow chart.

 

4tb ext. seagate hdd, roughly 2tb of data INCLUDING irreplaceable pictures and documents. working great when connected to usb on windows 7

 

built new system, microsoft greedy little grub hands makes it to wear i have to use windows 10 (f u MS), removed ext hdd and put into system as a data drive.

 

system see the drive split into 2, one 2048gb raw and one 1628 something or another unallocated. windows cant access drive!!!! didnt get no help anywhere for this program so i ventured and tried to fix it myself. no luck.

 

tried things. nothing important except i connected the hdd to a windows 7 system and now all of a sudden it sees 1.99tb ntfs formatted. NO DATA!!!!!!!!!!!! and the remaining drive space unallocated.

 

more things which put me back onto windows 10 again and same thing, 1.99tb ntfs with no data. i DID NOT do any formatting of the hdd. and according to the overpriced seagate recovery suite it can recover all my files. but no way am i paying 100 for 1 time use. tried some other programs and nothing is really woking.

 

so help me get my files back. all i care about is the pics/docs/music. im no longer concerned with any vids simplly for the fact i dont have anything large enough to store it all on while this drive gets fixed.

 

according to various tools and even seagates own the drive is healthy and passes all SMART tests.

 

again please help me get my files back, and maybe tell me what happened?

Put the drive back into the enclosure, you are not the first person to report that the data is not accessible if accessed directly.

 

If the data is accessible this way you need to copy everything to another place, install the drive internally, clean the disk (use diskpart) then create new partition(s). Because its a 4TB drive is recommended to initialize the disk as GPT.

thank you for the reply! but sadly i dont have the enclosure anymore. i should not that when i connected it back to windows 7, it was still directly connected. i just attempted to put win7 onto ryzen and found out the hard way its extremely way past my level of patience, knowledge, and how-to. but i made sure that drive wasnt touched when doing the install.

 

among my google searches it seemed like the mbr partition got corrupted? im not sure but i ended up on testdisk. and i cant figure out how to use it. i havent done anything with it.

 

on a side note i got a file recovery done, somewhat. it got a lot of my files, but not all. and i was wondering if thats bc those files ended up in the unallocated space. possible?

 

the file recovery program only scanned the 2048gb ntfs section.

nevermind the recovered "files" are more like just name holding junk. fml. back to square one. how to retreive files from the stupid ahole hdd. 

 

 

do you know how to use testdisk? all my searches keep leading back to it and that forum... id most likely die of old age before someone responds over there.

Testdisk isn't exactly a user friendly tool...

 

The recommended procedure is to clone the disk to another one and then play with the copy safely until you get the result you want

Don't forget that you need to recover the files to a different disk.

 

There are commercial recovery programs that are easy to use, they cost money but you can use them before purchase to check what the program can recover from the HDD (with preview of some file types) and decide to pay if you want.

Usually those programs will take a long time to scan the HDD for files, save the scan results so you can load this and save big time if you decide to buy the program to do the recovery.

ya no kidding. and actually that article i read and seemed exactly what my problem was... until the deeper search finished and i didnt find all my files. just like 3 different partitions. in fact heres the log from that test. before it switched itself to 2tb ntfs. still annoyed and confused on that. but i did also follow that articles SMART test guidelines and the drive is good and heathy. not a single sign of possiable physical damage.

sigh so im at the point of lose my data or lose money i dont have. story of my life. but does this log make sense to you?

Sorry I don't have big experience with testdisk!

 

It seems testdisk didn't find the missing partition, I suppose it was formatted as NTFS?

i would asgree, but i have less knowleadge then you lol. but to me im seeing FAT format tossed around a lot in the log. makes me wonder if i had it formatted as FAT32 and never switched it. i use to hook this up to a ps4, then to a lg smart tv, and then finally a router... and i know the ps4 had to have fat format...

 

also the r-studio program is running, it sees the ntfs format but is seeing "fat table entries" also... im really beginning to feel like this hdd is FUBAR....

Based on posts by other I think ps4 only works with FAT32... the problem with this is that FAT32 was developed long time ago and with a limit of 2TB, when some tool creates a FAT32 partition that passes this limit it may work initially but we never know when problems arise because some tool, OS, etc. decides to work on the volume without considered that there is a "semi-illegal" FAT32 partition with size bigger than 2TB...

 

I don't think the disk is bad only the File System structure is messed/corrupted.

You sir, i think mght of just accidently figured out what happened.

See i used windows 7 ultimate all the time. Only OS i would use. Ofcourse the os was tweaked, so it may very well of did the 4tb format. But bc it was always the same pc that would access it there wasnt a problem. And the last time i used the hdd was on win7 just fine. Plug it into win10 1st time and boom problems.

And that would explain all the ntfs and fat formats all these reports keep spitting out.

NTFS and FAT32 store/organize the data in different ways its not possible to retrieve the data after a file system change like that.

 

In some recovery tools its possible to specify that the tool should ignore the current partitions and try to identify files by scanning the full disk space because if the tool reads the existing partitions and try to use them to locate data it will most likely found nothing.

im doing a recovery on it now. appears to be ntfs. ofcourse every. single. f***ing. recovery program keeps listing ntfs WITH fat format/table entries, i will take screen shots. but take that however. im just done with this computer. thank you for the help. now im going to go post int he win10 area bc guess what nothing in win10 ever f***ing works bc its s***. sigh.
