Can you do this?

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
Run the tool, check the following options:

  • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (select Only Problems)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
  • List Restore Points

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Hi

I have tried to download the MiniToolBox but the computer does not give me the opporunity to either run or save the file.

It looks like the file might be downloading by the activity on the network monitor but I can not find any file thoat might have been downloaded on todays date.  Internet Explorer's download manager does not work so I can not check whether any file was downloaded.

Is there any other way in which I can obtain the file.  I do not have an operational computer in the house at the moment.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the information, I will take that in consideration...

I would like to recreate the BCD because it have some entry's that doesn't seem correct.

Boot the computer using the flash drive and access the Recovery Console to type the following commands:

d:
cd boot
attrib -h -r -s BCD
ren BCD BCD.old
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

I think that the Bootrec command will show you two windows installations on drives C: and L:, only answer Y to the Windows 10 entry (L:) and skip Windows 7

After recreating the BCD exist the Recovery Console and let Windows boot normally.

If any of those commands result in error, stop and tell me the error.

Hi

I ran the script as directed

After entering the Bootrec / rebuildebcd

I got the following answer:

Scanning all disks for winfows installations

then

Successfully scanned windows installations.

Total identified Windows Installations:0

Operation completed successfully.

Nothing about Win 10 or Win 7

I think that the Win 7 story is coming from the fact that I put the harddrive from my old computer, that had Win 7 Pro on it, into this one so that I could copy my mail address's and  emails to this computer.

Should I disconnect the Win 7 drive until the problem with Win 10 is sorted?

Just as a matter of interest, which part of the world are you in? I am in South Africa.  Just so that I can work out the time difference.

Thank

MikeBack

Hi,

The fact that it can't found any Windows installations isn't good!

Can you still start Windows?

I'm in Europe - Portugal.

Yes disconnect the old Windows 7 just in case we are working with the wrong partitions!

With the drive disconnected I would like to collect information about the partitions and volumes

diskpart
list volume
select disk 0
list partition
exit

In case you don't know you can type notepad to open the text editor and you can copy the output of the commands inside the Command Prompt if you right click on the title window and use Edit > Mark and Edit > Copy make sure you save the text file on the flash drive.

Hi
Is it going to be quicker to delete the current installation of Windows 10 and reinstall it. I have the installation discs for nearly all of the programmes on the machine, and definately all of the installation discs of the programmes that I use daily.
I inherited the computer from a college who passed away and I took over his incomplete projects. The OS was originally Win 7 which was upgraded to Win 10. The Win 7 serial no. is on the side of the machine. When I took the computer to a specialist in recovery here, he said that there was evidence that the problems went back many years.

Thanks

Hi,

Its your choice. Eventually doing a repair install may resolve the problem, upgrade Windows and keep all your data and most likely all your programs.

Sorry I remember that we already tried that...

Hi

Yes I can still start windows. Not much works though. Can sometimes get into the info from the 3 buttons on the bottom left  of the screen, but it I try to run any thing from them, they stop working.

On boot up it still gives the option for Win 7 or Win 10.  As I mentioned the computer was upgradedto Win10.  All the Win7 files are still on it.

Ran the script and mabe a text file and copied it to the flash drive.

Hi,

I think I understand the problem now we are working with the BCD of the old Windows 7 and not the one for Windows 10 because it seems the partition label on the current OS is WIN7 and the one I target is only labeled Windows, sorry for that.

Lets see if we can recreate the BCD:

c:
cd \boot
attrib -h -r -s BCD
ren BCD BCD.old
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

If the second command (cd ...) fails stop executing the remaining commands and let me know.

Hi,

Let the system boot normally.

I think this will not help on the other problems you describe but should allow you to run the Windows 10 setup from the flash drive and upgrade Windows 10 keeping all the files and programs, I'm hopping this also fix the other problems with the Start Menu, etc...

If the upgrade fails please collect the logs like you did from post #29

Hi

Windows booted and ran the upgrade.  Messed up the installation completely.  Doubled up the windows folders with Windows and Windows old both trying to control the computer.

I have installed an SSD drive and reloaded Windows completely.

Now busy reinstalling all of my programmes.

I trust that this will now end the upgrade saga and all will be well.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

I do not think that I will need any further assistance

Kind regards

MikeBack
