Several of my 90+ friends who still use PCs are ill-served by all the capabilities a new Windows 10 PC offers and, thus they have to maintain. Threatening warnings from scam and non-scam vendors exacerbate their worries and discomfort.

 

Whatever happened, I wonder, to those simple email boxes one could buy years ago for about $100? With a reasonably priced ISP connection one could send and receive email and attachments, thereby satisfying 95% of many people's needs. Some of the offerings could also offer a few additional age-relevant apps. They were easy to use and virtually maintenance-free....

 

Can anyone tell me if any of those devices are still available?

Look on Amazon for

Landel MailBug Email Appliance (LT-302W)

 

This only does text so no photos.  Requires a phone line instead of the Internet

 

A cheaper alternative if WiFi is available is an Amazon Fire tablet.  These are list at $50 for the 7" $80 for the 8" but on black friday or pre xmas specials they mark the 7" down as low as $25.  While a bit more complicated than the Mailbug they do allow you to surf the Internet and best of all you can get the Overdrive app and sign into your local library and get free e-books and audio books.  That's what I primarily use mine for but it does an OK job of reading emails.
