Guess the Toshiba is always going to run too hot.  Probably a design error.

Have you tried a different usb cable and port for the N: drive?

RK:Have you tried a different usb cable and port for the N: drive?

BF: Yes, partially. I do not remember if I played with cables, I did use different ports for, maybe,  two weeks, back in February. At one point, the N: drive stayed connected for 3-5 days, but then it resumed the game.

**** End of log ****

BF: I noticed errors in the CodeIntegrity Errors. They point to HarddiskVolume4, i.e. N: drive (all the way down in the report).  Maybe the key is here, but what do I do?

Thank you, Ron

Wouldn't hurt to swap the N: drives cable with something else or a new one just to make sure it's not something stupid like a bad cable.

For the Code Integrity you can try reinstalling Avast or better yet, uninstall it and reinstall on another drive.

You are getting this error:

Error: (06/15/2019 11:59:47 AM) (Source: ESENT) (User: )
Description: svchost (2900,R,98) TILEREPOSITORYS-1-5-18: Error -1023 (0xfffffc01) occurred while opening logfile C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database\EDB.log.

TileDataLayer was dropped two upgrades or more ago.  Which version of Windows do you have?  For Win 10 the latest is 1903  Search for

about your pc

and hit Enter then scroll down to Windows Specifications

Ron,

I changed cable but it did not help.

Yesterday, when I switched to Dell, I observed the strangest  screen image, never seen before: white screen with a pattern of PDF icons. The mouse and the keyboard were disabled (I tried ctr-alt-del). At some point, the screen went virgin white and I flipped the switch.

After flipping the switch back ON, the computer initialized pretty fast and the login screen appeared in 1 minute.  All drives were visible. In another minute, a note flashed reading "The last USB drive malfunctioned and Windows did not recognize it". Don't remember seeing this message before. I decided to get rid of the disk. According to the HD Sentinel, it has lived for 1540 days, with "more than 284 days left" - whatever that means. The disk was reformatted and unplugged.  All other disk are working, including the hottie 6TB Toshiba.

Your help is appreciated more than I can express in words.

However :-(

While doing all these checkups, I somehow lost the sound. A few days ago, I noticed that the 'bling' sound during the connecting/disconnecting the N: drive disappeared.

My monitor is NEC MultiSync, with built-in speakers. It's connected with a DVI cable; the sound travels via regular AUX cable with 1/8in (3.5mm) connectors.

A few minutes ago, I opened a random youtube video. No sound. Going to Ctr panel > Sound > Manage audio devices, the Playback tab displays Speakers/Headphones with a green checkmark, and the green bars jumping, but no sound comes out. I don't see anything muted. Can you help here please?

Boris

Try plugging a pair of headsets and see if you get sound then.

Also search for Device Manager find your Audio driver, right click on it and Uninstall then reboot.  Windows should discover it again and reinstall it.  Sometimes that will fix the problem.

Thank you, Ron,

It turns out the problem had nothing to with the computer. Since I thought of the monitor as a display only (never mind the built-in speakers), I missed the feature in the monitor settings which had two options for the sound input: Display Port and Audio Input. For some reason, the option was set to Display Port, which never worked I think. When I switched to Audio Input, the problem was solved.

So, now all drives are working and the data can be backed up except when Win 10 pushes updates and restarts the computer. I remember seeing in one of the menus that the computer can stay awake only 18 hours out of 24. I could not find it just now, only saw that I've selected 'PC never goes to sleep' option.

Is there a way to override the nanny settings and have the computer stay up 24 hours and updates installed on my free will?

Thank you!

Boris

I would think Control panel, Power Options, High Performance, Change Plan Settings and maybe also Change Advance Power Settings on the same page should allow you to keep it on.

To prevent Win 10 from installing automatically:

Settings. Update and Security.  Windows Updates. Advanced Options.

restart this Device... OFF

Also look at pause updates for 35 days.
