It’s 2019 and I still use Word97. I don’t need anything more than that, it’s perfect and I’m quite proficient at it. I hate the later versions of Word and their needless fussiness. However, since all new laptops come with Windows 10, there is a problem: although Word97 can be installed in Win10 and runs smoothly, Word macros cannot be created or run within it.

What can be tweaked in Win10 so as to allow Word97 macros to be created and run?

When I try to create a new Word97 macro, all I get is the error message "the macro could not be created” right at the start of the creation process (when giving it a name), whether I try to store it in Normal.dot or in the current file. This happens in Win7 and Win10. My regular Word97 is installed in a WinXP virtual machine, where Word macros work perfectly.

Support for Word97 has long been discontinued, so there are no updates.

Ok have you tried to repair your installation?

It’s useless to repair it. I’ve installed Word97 on three laptops, more than once: one Win7 and two Win10. It behaves the same in all of them. There is something missing (or taken out) from Win7 and Win10 that would allow Word97 macros to work. A dll or something like that.

I would just say upgrade to the lastest, I too went from office 95 to 97, then to office XP to 2003, to 2010 to 2016 to 2019, I personally find this version better than all the rest.  Yes it takes time of getting used to cause they have moved everything around, but the more you use the better it is.
