Hey Geeks:

I have an old Toshiba laptop that I use to try out new distros. I'm new to Linux, been saying that for four years, and have Mint on one computer and Manjaro on another.

I installed Modicia OS from a live stick on the Toshiba while connected to wifi. Install seemed to be successful on reboot. I played with the distro and set a few things up. All good until I tried to restart the computer. It wouldn't boot up. Black screen. F2 does nothing and neither does f12. It's like there is no OS installed.

Would appreciate any ideas as to how to boot up the computer.

Thanks, all, Bry...

Hello brycrip,

Here's some ideas to get started

1. check the GRUB bootloader

To do that

Restart the computer holding the shift key down. Anything happen there can you see anything ?

You should  see a list of the installed operating systems, a menu that can be navigated using the arrow keys. If not, then the problem is that the GRUB bootloader is broken or overwritten. Repairing the bootloader is the only solution

Please see here,

Thanks,

Joe :)

Hope some of this helps you today....

Hi Joe. Thanks for your response. Always good to hear from another Linux enthusiast. I opened the link you provided and read the article. That was good stuff. I don't have the Toshiba with me, presently. But will try a few things tonight and get back to you tomorrow. Again, much thanks.

Hi Joe... nothing new to report unfortunately. Booting up while pressing the Shift Key did nothing. And I tried booting to Grub Repair which I downloaded from Sourceforge. I made a live stick from Grub Repair but couldn't boot from it. No f2 or f12. I can hear the computer working, but just a black screen. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

This used to work on my old Toshiba (don't have it any more, so can't test to see if I've remembered it right), it may or may not work for yours.

Try holding down the Esc key when you power up your computer.

An error message should pop up .... when it does release the ESC key and ....

Press F1 to get into BIOS.

Thanks to both of you. That General Linux Forum looks promising, Joe. Why haven't I heard of it before? Anyway I'm joining up. Perfect for distro hoppers who need general advice. Then rely on the Communities for specifics. Great!

And Gary. Great tip. I'll try it when I get home and let you know how I make out tomorrow.

Thanks again,

Bry

Sorry for the delay. Unfortunately holding down the Esc Key on boot-up did nothing. Anything else I might try before throwing this Toshiba into the harbor?

Nothing I can think of.

All I can say is, BIOS/UEFI is firmware, which is loaded before your OS, so the fact that you can't access it, suggests that the problem is likely to be a hardware fault rather than anything else.

Not really my area of expertise.

Thanks Gary. Well it is an old computer and the hinges are broken so I'll pull the ram and hard drive and deep six it. And thanks to Joe as well.

All best you guys,

Bry
