Best Answer Sugartooth , 21 December 2019 - 05:03 PM

Hi Phill, I'm purchasing a new laptop instead of continuing on. Thank you, and to the others, for all their assistance during this time.   I also sent you a PM.Anna Go to the full post »

Hello,

I have a Dell Windows 10 laptop which is close to 3 years old. Sometime last week when I went to shut it down for the night, I saw there was a Windows update, so I selected it. Ever since then, I have had a hard time turning it on. The screen reads that I have "no bootable devices". Or if the laptop is on, it will suddenly make a loud beeping noise and stop working. Something to the effect that it is collecting errors and will restart.

I tried doing a System Restore, but discovered I had no Restore points. What else can I try?

Hi,

Something to the effect that it is collecting errors and will restart.

Is the "collecting errors" message on a blue screen?

Let's run a few diagnostic tools to see what could be causing the issues. Please do this...

---------------------------------------------------
MiniToolBox

Download MiniToolBox by Farbar and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click MiniToolBox.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Check the following boxes:
    Flush DNS
    Report IE Proxy Settings
    Reset IE Proxy Settings
    Report FF Proxy Settings
    Reset FF Proxy Settings
    List content of Hosts
    List IP configuration
    List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
    List Installed Programs
    List Devices
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
    List Minidump Files
    List Restore Points
  • Click Go
  • When the scan is complete, the tool will create a log (MTB.txt).
  • Copy and paste the contents of MTB.txt into your next reply.
---------------------------------------------------
Event Viewer Tool

Download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click VEW.exe and select Run as Administrator. <<< Important
  • When the tool opens, check the following boxes:

    Select log to query
    System

    Select type to list
    Error
    Warning

  • Click the Number of Events button and type 20 in the "1 to 20" box.
  • Select Run
  • When complete, a log will open in Notepad. (VEW.txt) Please post its contents in your next reply.

Hi iMacg3,

Yes, the message is on a blue screen.

I have a question. Why does Vino's Event Viewer say it ran on Windows 7 when this is a Windows 10?

Hi,

I have a question. Why does Vino's Event Viewer say it ran on Windows 7 when this is a Windows 10?

Most likely, the tool hasn't been updated for Windows 10 and incorrectly shows the OS as Windows 7.

I recommend you back up any important data from the computer to external media - there are some signs the hard disk may be failing.

The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of an IO failure on volume C:.

Once you have backed up the data, please run a hard disk test with GSmartControl:

---------------------------------------------------
GSmartControl

Download gsmartcontrol and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract the .zip file to your desktop. (Right-click the file, and select Extract)
  • Double-click on gsmartcontrol.exe
  • A list of hard drives will appear, single-click each disk to see Drive Information and identify your drive.
note: most machines will only have one or two entries, but an easy way to identify your drive is by its size.
  • Double-click on the hard drive to see detailed Device Information
  • Click on the Attributes tab, do you see any red or pink entries like the ones below? Please list the names in your next reply if there are any.
    info_failing.png
  • Click on the Perform Tests tab.
  • Select Extended Self-Test and click Execute.
note: this test can take several hours to run
  • Allow the test to complete, the results will be displayed at the bottom.
  • Please post the result of the scan in your next reply.

Hello again,

Out of curiosity, I have been using my laptop to binge on Netflix and youtube. Could that have anything to do with this problem?

There were no red or pink entries under the Attributes tab.

I ran the Extended Self-Test twice. Both times, it listed Test Result: Interrupted (host reset). Check the Self-test log for more information.

This is the result of the second scan.

Hi,

Watching Netflix/YouTube shouldn't cause these issues.

Let's try running the chkdsk utility:

---------------------------------------------------
chkdsk /r

Press the Windows Key + R. This will open the Run box.
Type CMD and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
A command prompt window will open. Type chkdsk /r (note the space between chkdsk and /r) and press Enter.

A message will appear stating that chkdsk will schedule the disk check until the next reboot. Press Y to continue.

Restart your computer. Before Windows loads, chkdsk will begin scanning your hard drive for bad sectors and attempt to repair them. This may take some time.

Once it is complete, your computer will boot to Windows.
  • Press the Windows Key + R. Type eventvwr and press Enter.
  • The Event Viewer window will open.
  • In the left pane, expand "Windows Logs" and then click on Application.
  • In the right pane, at the top, click on the column heading Source to sort the list alphabetically.
  • Look in the Source column for "Wininit", with an entry corresponding to the date and time of the disk check.
  • Click on that Wininit entry to select it.
  • On the top main menu, click Action > Copy > Copy Details as Text.
  • Paste the contents into your next reply.

Hello,

I'm not able to run the chkdsk utility. This is the message I receive: Access denied as you do not have sufficient privileges or the disk may be locked by another process. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode and make sure the disk is unlocked.

I am the only one who uses my laptop, so it must be locked by another process?

Click the Start button, type Command Prompt, right click "Command Prompt" in the results and select Run as Administrator. Attempt to run chkdsk from the command prompt - do you still receive the error message?

Hello,

It's about the same. When I turned it on today, the Dell SupportAssist came on and it read: Your system seems to be having trouble starting. Dell SupportAssist is scanning your hardware for a possible cause. After the scan, there was a loud beep, something flashed too quickly on the screen for me to read, then: Hardware scan complete with no issues. No bootable devices were found! Possible causes could be a corrupt OS image or a boot device is not enabled in BIOS setup. I then clicked on the Shutdown button and restarted the laptop and it started.

However, when I tried to reply to you, I got a Blue Screen which read: Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're collecting information and will restart the computer for you. When it restarted, it read: No bootable devices. I clicked the Shutdown button and restarted it again.

Hello again,

I'm not sure. I was trying to write everything down and it disappeared before I could catch it all. When it happens again, I'll be sure to check for it. Thank you for all your help so far.
