Windows did an automatic upgrade to the beta system free windows 10 offered in, I believe 2015 or 2017.  I have not had a problem with the PC and Epson printer in the past.   Since this upgrade/update, I can no longer print.  I have an HP Pavilion Desktop 2015, and use Google Chrome as a default browser.   My Epson printer is a 4/1 wireless printer WF-2540.    I also have a PC Pavilion 17 TS Notebook PC.   Running Windows Home 64-bit Version: 18362.267 which has no problem printing to the printer.  My husband has a Toshiba running Win-Vista and can print just find.
I have installed a program to run  .prn files, but wants a Printer File name.    I do not understand any of this and can not find anything in Windows information that says anything about .prn files.
Please can some one help me.
My first person I ever talked to on another issue was and gentleman named Bruce.

I have installed a program to run  .prn files, but wants a Printer File name.

Printers are not really my forte but lets see if I am able to help.

Can I ask what it is that you are trying to print and in what format are you saving the data before you attempt to print it.

It is all formats, saves as word, excel, pictures, all the stuff I do.  I can't print directions or contents from stores or whatever I may need.  I have to do them and then put them on a flash drive and then print on my laptop from the flash drive.  This all happened after the new upgrade from windows.  I do not understand any of the updates and things listed to know what to delete or what to leave alone.

I'll give it a shot here. There are numerous things that could be the problem. Since you say that it does not print at all I am thinking it is not recognized by your computer.

So, a couple things to check are as follows:

NOTE: not in any particular order.

1. Are you getting any error messages on the computer or the printer it self?

2. Is the printer recognized by the computer? Type "printer" in the search box and then go to Printers and Scanners in the system settings. Is your printer there?

3. Is the printer connected by USB cable or wireless?

4. Are you hearing any noise at all coming from the printer when it schould be printing?

5. Under devices and printers is the printer set as default? Assuming the printer shows installed.

6. Have you looked at the manual? Specifically page 242.

7. Have you run a product check. This is on page 225 and will tell us if it is able to print anything.

8. Have you tried the FAQ's at the Epson site?

The manuals are here: https://epson.com/Su...CC36201#manuals

The user manual is the one you want but it wouldn't hurt to get the install guide also.

Thanks for the additional support Runner123

Windows did an automatic upgrade to the beta system free windows 10 offered in, I believe 2015 or 2017.  I have not had a problem with the PC and Epson printer in the past.

Based on the info in your OP you have had this problem for between two and four years, in addition to what 123Runner has advised, couple of questions if I may;

What do you mean by "beta system free windows 10"

Is Windows 10 fully up to date.

Have you tried uninstalling the printer and all of its associated software and then reinstalling it, if yes and the printer is connected to the computer using a USB connection, was the USB connection disconnected from the computer while the Epson software was reinstalled and only connected to the computer when an on screen message asked you  to do so.

Sorry it has been a busy week and week end.

#1, just a pop up saying it needs .prn file.  ??????

#2, Yes.

#3, Printer Wireless.

#4 NO.

#5 Yes,

#6 Yes,

#7 Yes,

#8 Yes.

The printer is fine and has been a no problem printer.

I have not had this problem with my printer before.  Before Windows 10 was sold, new computer buyers where given an option to download a version of Win 10 and as of August this year, I was given an upgrade from Microsoft for win 10.   Since they did the upgrade, my printer doesn't want to print when a document  is asked to print.  It needs a .prn file.  I don't know if they meant and extension but I can find no such extension.

According to Microsoft the computer says it is up to date.  My window office is 2007,  that is no longer updated by microsoft, I guess.   Maybe I should just uninstall my home and Student office 2007?????

Have you tried connecting the printer by USB and see if that works? This to eliminate a wireless issue.

Have you done what phillpower2 has asked which is to uninstall and reinstall as per the manual?

Its sounding like some default printer settings are messed up and a reinstall should fix it.

I guess I could try that uninstall/reinstall.  Will that mess up the other computers on the printer.   I have my PC which has the problem, my Laptop has no problem, and my husbands Laptop runs off  of the system.  I am not very computer wise.  I need computer for dummies language to understand what I need to do.   I am not sure what you mean connecting with the USB.

What about just uninstalling my Office 2007, as windows does not update it?

Please bare with me, my granddaughter is getting married in 2 weeks and we are all pretty busy.

Since it wont print pictures or pdf documents either, then uninstalling your office will do no good.

Uninstall and reinstall the printer. It will not effect your other computers because the printer software is installed on each computer.

Finally uninstalled and reinstalled my Epson WF-2540 4/1 /Wireless printer today and all seems to be working.  I have not tried to write a document and print it as of yet.  Will let you know if there are any problems later today.   One thing it did change is my default printer.    I was using EPSON48B941 (WF-2540 Series) and it made WF-2540 Series (NETWORK) the default.   My laptop and my husbands laptop use the 1st one listed.  It works on the laptops just fine.

I did a new spreadsheet and all is good.

Thank you for your time.

You were nice to work with.

Glad that that helped. The name on the printer doesn't matter.
