Hi all, I tend to buy second user PC's such as Dell or HP. Ex corporate machines. The one I have now is a few years old and is a little sluggish. I only use it for the net, and a little image editing really. Anyway, looking on ebay for a faster model, I note that most in my budget are i3's or i5's. Mine is an i7, so I think an i3 would be a downgrade? Maybe it's going to be a struggle to get a faster pc for a couple of hundred quid? I have done a snapshot of my current config, any comments/guidance on upgrade appreciated. I've attached a speccy snapshot of my current config. Any comments appreciated.

Hello chrisauk,

If you need guidance on purchasing a new/refurbished computer can you let us know your maximum budget.

Something that I note in your Speccy info is that the RAM is only working in single channel mode which is only 50% of the speed that it can operate at, this normally suggests that there are two sticks of RAM present on a MB that has four memory slots but one of the sticks is in the wrong slot on the MB.

What is the model name or number of the HP computer that you have.

Hi, thank you for your help. I bought it on ebay and the details were ....

HP Compaq 8300 Elite SFF i7-3770 Quad 3.40GHz 8GB RAM 1000GB HDD Windows 10 Pro

..Update: - after reseating the ram i now do have 8GB showing, so hopwfully that will help.

As for an SSD, any links to one that will work in this box would be appreciated?

If you rerun Speccy is the 8GB of RAM shown to be running in Dual Channel Mode.

Possible upgrades for your computer here the upgrades are guaranteed compatible when you order from Crucial but you may be able to save yourself some cash if you shop around and purchase something that matches the Crucial specs, any alternative may need the purchase of an additional adaptor so be careful when ordering, example drive here note the Frequently bought together info at the link.

You are welcome btw  :)

Hi,

As for an SSD, any links to one that will work in this box would be appreciated?

The problem with those SFF machines is that normally there isn't any extra Sata port available inside (I have 8200 SFF at my work) you can install a 2.5" Sata SSD to replace the HDD or the CD/DVD drive the first option is simpler because you can usually find some hole to hold the SSD without needing to purchase a special adapter because the ssd is lighter and easy do hold.

If you decide to replace the optical drive instead you will need to find some plastic to fill the big 5.25" gap or a proper case similar to this.

Hi, the ram is running in Dual mode, yes.

And I would be looking at getting an SSD to replace the current C, hard drive. So would just sit it in same place.

My plan would be this: -

Using drive image I would back up the whole of my current C drive before removing it. I would then put the SSD in, and restore the drive image backup onto it.

Will / should  it be as easy as that?

Any improvement with the RAM running in Dual Channel mode.

Noticed that you have post elsewhere regarding this and have decided to do a clean install of Windows, that is what I would do myself, just be sure that you have all your drivers saved to a thumbdrive ready to install once you have Windows up and running, once Windows has been installed start with installing the MBs chipset drivers first and then go from there.
