Looking for a Middleware or API Idea

Hello G2G Community, 

 

A few friends and I are working on a project together. We've got a game interface that we've developed using Python 3, but we need to be able to interact with a handful of things and we're a bit inexperienced. The pieces that we need to interact with are multiple screens, lights, sensors, servos, and audio. We need the sensors to be able to communicate with the game interface and be able to have certain actions trigger lights/videos. 

 

I've had people say we should consider building an API, but I'm wondering if there's something out there that could be more useful or easier to work with. I apologies for how vague the post is, but I am trying not to give details that could give away too much about the project we're working on. If anyone has any advice, I more than welcome it. We're new to this and have been learning along the way. I'd appreciate any help available!
