The last few days, my system (Windows 7 - 64 bit OS with 1.86 GHz CPU and3 GB RAM) is taking much longer to boot than usual. After power-up, I don't hear the startup chime for several minutes and the desktop only shows blank wallpaper until the icons load. The HD light doesn't stop its activity for about 10 minutes. I looked for help online and most of these say to shut off most items in the startup menu. Attached is a screen shot of my startup and nothing has changed there even from when it booted more quickly. Any advice? Thanks.

Have you tried taking a look at your Task Manager?: How to Open Task Manager Windows 7/8/10

Maybe a solution here?:

Troubleshoot a Slow PC in Windows 7

Windows 7 is extremely slow to boot

Slow start up for windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit

I usually check the Processes, Performance, Startup tabs. There are others that might be useful Many of these tabcolumns can be changed as to what shows usually by right-clicking one of the columns at the top. Some can be unchecked if not providing info you want to make more room. Left-clicking a column will re-order the column contents.

It almost sounds like something is updating, but that certainly would be finished after a few days.

AstraNut has given you excellent advice to pursue...

Good luck.

OK. Don't remember all about Win 7. :P I see your startups from using msconfig (ofter forget this on Win 10 even).  I would uninstall Quicktime for one. It is no longer supported by Apple and hasn't had any security updates in ages.

I see that System Idle is at 99%. Just means that that's how much CPU is available should any program need to run. Good thing in a way. It seems there is something definitely in booting causing a slow down since this has never been normal for you. I take it that shut down is normal and that, when running any programs or opening web pages in the browser, all this is still normal. If so, the network use is probably normal even at boot so any modem/rounteris probably ok. Same for wi-fi if you are using it.

The only things I can think of that would slow PC at boot is updates files being loaded (checked?) or malware trying to upload/download files only at boot time. Maybe a malware scan with GeekstoGo recommended malware programs. If problems show up, definitely go to the Malware Forum here and ask for help. Maybe this will help too:

Windows 7 recently running very slow due to heavy disk activity PID 4

There are programs you can run like using the Check Disk Utility, System Maintenance Troubleshooter or doing a Clean Boot.

I emptied the recycle bin (which had over 500 items in it, mainly old MSE def updates) and ran a disk defrag. It sure shut down fast after that. Boot up this morning took about 10 minutes. I didn't watch it, though, to see if the desktop appeared without the icons immediately appearing.

I went to the Malware board and noticed a lot of people having trouble with startupchecklibrary.dll. Would this be a problem in Windos 7 or is this a Windows 10 file?

I downloaded Farbar and attempted to run it. It ran for about a minute than it stuck on a file named appid and then it said PROGRAM NOT RESPONDING. The HD light came on steady for about 5 minutes after this. What's going on here?

This is how far it scanned:

Just make sure you make a Restore Point before you do anything at any time. Definitely backup all your files you want to keep on an external harddrive or in the cloud if you have that kind of service. Some cleanups/removals have to be done in Safe Mode.

As you said, a lot of people are having problems with startupchecklibrary.dll. file. You should run a deep scan with one of the recommended anti-virus programs. Plus, I would definitely post in the Malware Forum here as you could have a data-miner, or any other malware that is using your boot time to do things you don't want. Might also take a read of this site but do not do anything until you check with someone in the Malware Forum:

What is StartupCheckLibrary.dll?

I would also see what is being said in Microsoft's Answer Community. Mainly, read Greg Carmack's (Windows MVP 2010-20) reply. This is dated October 3, 2019 so it is current. He also recommended to run a deep scan with MalwareBytes program which is very good program. I run the free version sometimes although I have Win 10's Window Defender running.

Another thing I would do is remove/disable all the browser add-ons you may have installed and reinstall later only the ones you definitely are needed or have been verified safe. Then I would check Control Panel and remove any programs you think may have installed unwanted programs when it was installed. There are soooo many ways to get infected without you even noticing it. The people in the Malware Forum are very, very good in helping spot this stuff.
