Seagate hard drives.  If you have one it's going to fail on you so backup your data now!

I thought Seagates were better than Toshiba, Hitachi & Western Digital. I've only ever bought Seagates. The reviews on amazon suggest Seagates are better too. Aren't they?

Btw This link doesn't load: https://www.king5.co...-120637284.html

And

Is the Kaspersky/Bit Defender suites able to replace the 2 malwarebytes anti-rootkit & ransomware?

I only buy Western Digital black.  Never had one fail.  Seagates are usually the cheapest option and I see a lot of them dying on the forum.  I've had two Seagates fail within 6 months and their rep on the web is pretty bad.  Check your SMART on the Seagates you have and they almost always show read errors.

The two links are pretty old so not surprising that they aren't working any more.  Thanks.  Will try and find some newer links.  As I remember one of the links was about a guy being raided for child porn because his neighbor was stealing his unsecured WiFi and uploading to kiddie porn sites.

Kaspersky and Bitdefender are probably all you need.  I see very few systems with either on the malware forum and when I do the problem is usually not malware but a failing (usually Seagate) hard drive.

Okay thank you.

Seagate told me that if Seatools passes a short generic and long generic scan, then SMART is okay and HDD is healthy.

Isn't that true?

I suppose if it passes the long test it's OK but I still say if the SMART shows errors it's a sign of a poor drive.

Okay so Short Generic isn't enough to deem it healthy. Thanks!

Hi wanted to ask, do you think I need a port scanner to stay with Windows 7? If so, what do you recommend?

If you are behind a router you are normally OK.  You can check that the router is blocking things like it should by using Shields Up or Leak Test from https://www.grc.com/default.htm

Shieldup tested fine and gave me a green result (which it defines as Good)

BUT, I downloaded Leaktest, and read the intro dialog message, which asked me to select "NO" and then it ran the test and told me

"Firewall Penetrated!

LeakTest WAS ABLE to connect to
the main GRC.COM Web Server!

LeakTest was not prevented from connecting to the Gibson Research web server.  You either have no firewall,  you have deliberately allowed LeakTest to connect outbound,  or (if neither of those), LeakTest has just slipped past your firewall's outbound "protection", if any.
"

What should I do?

Two types of firewalls:

standard on all Win 7 is to block all incoming traffic that isn't approved.

Optional sometimes found in anti-virus suites is an outbound blocking firewall.  You don't normally have an outbound blocking firewall so it is no surprise that Leaktest fails.  If you want one you can try tinywall:

https://tinywall.pados.hu/download.php

Read about it at:

https://tinywall.pados.hu/features.php

and

Hey I'm struggling to print something, when I control Panel>troubleshoot the printer, it says printer is not turned on, but it is. In the Job status window it says printer is offline.

Event id: 808

The print spooler failed to load a plug-in module C:\Windows\system32\spool\DRIVERS\x64\3\E_IUIC1BZE.DLL, error code 0xc1. See the event user data for context information.

Assuming the printer used to work or is rated to work with Win 7 the first thing I would do is uninstall the thing.  Reboot.  Download a new version of the software and reinstall.  Make sure to right click and Run As Admin when installing if that is an option.

Appears the file is from an Epson

I went to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\Network and Internet

and then ran troubleshooter for printer, then Homegroup, then Network and then had to turn on Network Discovery.

I disabled Network Discovery few months ago when I realised that my Smart TV kept displaying my computer as a device to connect to.

But if I keep Network Discovery Off, my printer is shown as offline and inaccessible.

Is there a way to access my printer on Network without my PC being discovered as a device on other devices?

Also, the auto troubleshooter had to change some Windows Firewall Policies (I haven't installed TinyWall yet, so this isn't the problem) and now I've got around ALL 20 Core Networking Allow policies enabled on both Inbound & Outbound.

I don't know if that's safe.

If you use a static IP Address on the printer then Add printer and then  select the printer is not listed and then select Network, TCP/IP, put in the static address, etc  does it still need the Network Discovery?  (use a static address that is above (or below) the range that your DHCP likes to assign.  I use 192.168.1.50 since my DHCP assigns IP addresses starting with 2 and working its way up.)

How do I find out what static IP address my printer uses and what DHCP assigns?
