I installed my EVO last night.  My computer is so much easier to use now.  I should have installed an SSD a long time ago. The Samsung Data Migration software was super easy to use.  I didn't have to enter any information, and the cloning took only about 45 minutes.

I ran Benchmark, then OP, then PO, then Benchmark again.  These are the Benchmark first and second run results:

First run:Sequential Read=280  Sequential Write=268  Random Read=14892 Random Write=10498

Second run:Sequential Read=281  Sequential Write=269  Random Read=13916 Random Write=10986

In Performance Optimization should I also select Rapid Status?

In Performance Optimization WINRE_DRV is also listed as needing optimization, but when I select it for optimization the software doesn't do anything.

Should I run Benchmark then the Over Provisioning then Performance Optimization then rerun Benchmark again for my external HD also?  Thanks.

Top is with Avast turned off and no programs

Middle is Avast turned off and Firefox running with gmail & geekstogo tabs

bottom with Avast on and Firefox running with gmail & geekstogo tabs

sam2.jpg

I have Rapid turned on.  As I remember it made a big difference in scores from Magician but HD Tune wasn't impressed.  Had about the same results pre and post Rapid.

Don't worry about WINRE_DRV

It's not used on a daily basis just for recovery:

I don't see any malware either but we could make some improvements.  You have some 6000 + entries in your Hosts file.  This was a good idea back in XP days but a very bad idea in Win 8.  Not sure what program you have or had that did that but it would speed things up to reset the Hosts file.

Search for

notepad.exe

when it finds it, right click and Run As Admin.

File, Open, and navigate to and open C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts

Delete every line that doesn't start with #

File, Save

You also have a lot of errors.  One of them is from

4kvideodownloader.  I would uninstall it.

I would also run dism and sfc to check your system files.

Open an elevated command prompt:

http://www.eightforu...indows-8-a.html

(If you open an elevated Command Prompt properly it will say Administrator: Command Prompt in the margin at the top of the window)

Once you have an elevated command prompt:

Type:

DISM  /Online  /Cleanup-Image  /RestoreHealth

(I use two spaces so you can be sure to see where one space goes.)
Hit Enter.  This will take a while (10-20 minutes) to complete.  Once the prompt returns:

Reboot.  Open an elevated Command Prompt again and type (with an Enter after the line):

sfc  /scannow

This will also take a few minutes.

When it finishes it will say one of the following:

Windows did not find any integrity violations (a good thing)
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them (a good thing)
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them (not a good thing)

If you get the last result then type:

findstr  /c:"[SR]"  \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log  >  %UserProfile%\desktop\junk.txt

Hit Enter.  Then type::

notepad %UserProfile%\desktop\junk.txt

Hit Enter.

Copy the text from notepad and paste it into a reply.

After you finish SFC, regardless of the result:

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.  (Each time you run VEW it overwrites the log so copy the first one to a Reply or rename it before running it a second time.)

The only thing listed in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts was:127.0.0.1 localhost.

I ran DISM  /Online  /Cleanup-Image  /RestoreHealth for thirty minutes, but it did not display percentage completed or that it completed from what I remember.  I don't remember what the last line said after running it for thirty minutes.

After running sfc  /scannow it gave the result "Windows did not find any integrity violations".

When I use 4kvideodownloader to download videos when my WiFi is weak the download will commonly fail which is probably recorded as an error.  So I think my weak WiFi is causing the errors not 4kvideodownloader.

Do you have control of the router that provides your WiFi?  Might be able to make some improvements.

Can you attach

C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

This is a hidden location so you have to tell Windows to let you see it:

http://www.howtogeek...-windows-vista/

That might help determine why DISM isn't cooperating tho I suppose if the WiFi were bad it might have problems.  It needs Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Windows Update to work.  Both use the Internet.  Wouldn't hurt to check that they are running:

Search for

services.msc

hit Enter

Scroll down to Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) .  Is it running?  If not will it start?

Also check Windows Update.

BITS is running.

I tried running DISM  again when my WiFi was working well and it completed.  I think it took much longer than twenty minutes, so maybe I concluded that it would not complete the first time because it was taking so long.

Windows Update History shows the last KB3000850 cumulative update was on 3/12/2015, and the KB2966828 update failed to install on 1/13/20 and 1/14/20.  These are the only three items listed in my Update History.  My Update History on my previous hard drive listed one failed update over and over which I believe was KB2966828.  On another thread of mine the tech told me that the update that kept failing to install should not be installed, so it did not matter that it was failing to install.  I have my updates set to update automatically, but I don't remember if  any updates installed successfully.  I only remember that one update failing to install over and over.

My landlord will return from vacation in two weeks.  I'll ask him then if I can have access to the router.

Glad DISM finally worked.

Let's see if there is anything that can be done about the WiFi:

Download inssider

http://www.techspot....6-inssider.html
Double click to install it. Then run it by right click and Run As Admin.

It will show you a graph in the bottom left that has your signal in blue and competing signals in orange and yellow.  It may also recommend a different channel which might have less interference.

Moving to a different channel  with less interference (by logging on to your router) can drastically improve performance.  Most routers claim to automatically choose the best channel, however, that never seems to work so it's best to manually select the channel with the least interference.

Not all WiFi transceivers are the same.  If you are willing to use a USB Wifi adapter with antennae you can sometimes see a big difference.  They are not that expensive.  I have one I bought for $10.  Also a lot depends on the distance from the router.  If the router is close to one end of your apartment and your PC at the other then something like a WiFi extender might help.  These are a bit more: $20 and up.

I currently use the Belkin Dual-Band Wireless Range Extender Model:F9K1106v1.  I have moved it to different locations and recorded its signal strength at each location with a software program that I don't remember the name of, so I know what the best locations are.  The router is upstairs, and there is an extender plugged into an outlet directly downstairs from the router.  Should I use a transceiver also?  If so, which one would you recommend?  I don't mind paying quite a bit if it will make a significant improvement.

Inssider does not recommend any channel.  One SSID of the six listed does not have a name.  The unnamed SSID and Netgear73exteneded had the strongest or second strongest signal for the entire time I watched them.  I have always used either Netgear73 or Netgear73extened.  I always use Netgear73extened unless it's not working well on my computer at which time I choose Netgear73.  Netgear73extened is weak at times probably when at least one other person is using it.  Netgear73 currently has the weakest or second weakest signal as shown in Inssider.  i don't believe that Netgear73 ever has a strong signal.

I am only able to use either Netgear73 or Netgear73extened currently because the named SSIDs are already taken, and I would need to log into the router in order to use the unnamed channel, correct?

All of the SSIDs or channels are listed in the 2.4 GHz band box in Inssider, but the Belkin Setup lists several channels as 5GHz.  Isn't 5GHz better?   Both Netgear73 and Netgear73extened are always listed as 5GHz and 2.4GHz in Belkin Setup, and I believe the 5GHz versions of both always or usually show a stronger signal in Belkin Setup.

You might look into a power line extender pair.  I use a TP-Link AV600.  One end plugs into the wall near the router and you connect a cable between it and the router.  The other end plugs into the wall near your PC.  Mine works great until it doesn't then I just unplug it and it resets and works for a while.  (It also seems to come back on its own but it takes a bit longer)  I think there is some interference like the motor in the fridge that causes it to break lock.  I had another set from Netgear that had the same problem.

Supposedly the 5 has shorter range but higher bandwidth than the 2.4.  Might have less interference tho.

If I don't choose a power line extender pair should I try a USB WiFi adapter with antennae?
