Hello There!

First let me thank you in advance for any and all help in this matter, your help is tremendously appreciated.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium - Service Pack 1. When I tried updating the virus and spyware definitions for Microsoft Security Essentials, I received the following message:

VIRUS AND SPYWARE DEFINITIONS COULDNT BE UPDATED.

THIS APP COULDNT CHECK FOR VIRUS AND SPYWARE DEFINITION UPDATES. CHECK YOUR INTERNET OR NETWORK CONNECTIONS AND TRY AGAIN.

ERROR CODE:0X80072efd

ERROR DESCRIPTION: AN INTERNET CONNECTION COULDNT BE DETECTED. CHECK YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION THEN TRY AGAIN.

End of message.

Now I'm not all the computer savvy but I dont understand this message. I was 100% online. Can you help me straighten this out?

Again, I thank you.

Peace to you and yours

  • Get FRST from http://www.bleepingc...very-scan-tool/You need to download the appropriate tool for your PC.  If you don't know if you have a 32 or 64 bit system get them both.  Only one will work and that's the right one.
  • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Check the Addition.txt box
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste log back here.
  • It will generate another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

After reading your response I decided to try and run the update again before implementing your instructions. Lo and behold it updated without hesitation. My apologies for wasting your time.
