I have an HP laptop w/Win10... have moved ALL my photos and other info from all my devices onto a Silicone Power 4Tb portable hard drive. Was doing great until couple days ago... Tried to delete a group of duplicate photos... Error "0x80070052 The directory or file cannot be created."   I realize I have put too many files on the HD, but now I can't delete anything. Can move things from folder to folder, though. 

Until I started looking online for a solution, I had no idea that I should have been using "safely remove HD" procedure before unplugging the HD!!!  I'm pretty sure I have some serious corrupted files. :-(  

Can anyone help me??? This is practically every photo I've taken for the past 15 years!!!

Unlikely that putting too many files on it would cause a problem.  It would  just tell you it was out of space.   The main reason you are supposed to safely remove is that the system will cache data that is to be written and then empty the cache as the data is written on the disk.  With an SSD the time to empty the cache is minimal so it's unlikely you will have many unfinished files.  Unfortunately I'm afraid SSDs are not as reliable as they pretend.  I've had two fail completely.

 

Sometimes you can just run a disk check

but if it tells you need to format it first you are in bad shape (don't do it)
