I ran VEW (please see logs below). I will attempt to follow your other recommendations as soon as I am able to get a quiet period in which to do it - not an easy thing in my household!

You never responded the other day when I asked whether you thought perhaps this computer is, after all, too old to run Windows 10. I have however at times been seriously considering going back to Windows 7 (I have a clone of Windows 7 on my second hard drive). Do think we are close to succeeding? (I am in need of a bit of encouragement!)

I asked you before whether you thought that running the Windows All-in-One Repair program would help. In the absence of a reply from you - and as there always seem to be many othere different problems coming up when I ran VEW, aside from the profile problems - I decided to run it now. You will see from the log below that it reported that it has solved several problems. It probably has not solved the profile problems - at least, I am still unable to log into the Administrator profile. Unfortunately though,  it seems to have caused me a problem running VEW as when I try to run it now I just get the following message: -

runtimeerror.jpg

I am beginning to feel quite strongly now that the best thing to do would be to do a clean install of Windows 10. Am I correct in thinking that now that I have had Windows 10 on here (albeit a seemingly rubbishy version!) that it would be possible to do that, without having to buy a new licence? I think I may well still have a copy of Windows 10 on a memory stick somewhere, from when I first took over my daughter's old laptop some time ago.

Anyway, here is the log: -

Sorry for the delay.  Daughter drafted me to work on a system she had problems with at work.

Spent two full days on it without much luck.  Won't let you search and can't get Windows Update to work manually.  Oh well.  She can always have the company send out another PC.

I would not use the old stick.  Instead go to

https://www.microsof...nload/windows10

and click on

Download Tool Now.

Download and Save then right click and Run As Admin and follow the directions.

Make sure you have the license number written down.

You can then boot off the stick and try Repair Windows or do a fresh install.

Read the instructions on the page so you have an idea of what you need to do.

No problem at all. Sorry you didn't manage to fix your daughter's system though. That must have been frustrating after spending so much time on it.

I would not use the old stick.

After posting my last message, I tried looking through my memory sticks but eventually decided to start again and re-download Windows 10. I found my own way to the link that you have now posted, so hopefully the stick should be okay and ready to use now. It is a long time since I did any of this stuff and I had forgotten (if I ever knew) that it gives you the option to repair Windows as well, so guess I could give that a whirl.

It might be a little while before I deal with this, as I need to check everything is backed up. Most of my data is on my second hard drive - the one that has the clone of Windows 10 on it - and that was being automatically backed up onto my external drive by a program (Touro Cloud Backup) that came with the drive. I discovered recently though that it had not been backing up for a while because I apparently had not been using it. By that, they meant that I was not using the cloud part of the program which I never wanted anyway - so they had deleted my account without even telling me! :( Anyway...... before possibly reinstalling Windows, I need to clean up my external drive, back up the data again to be sure it is all there and also clean up some odd bits and pieces that have gone onto my desktop and never been moved to the other drive. (I also need to rediscover how to back up my husband's emails, for which he uses Mozilla Thunderbird)

Thanks and goodbye for now.

The Manual way looks like it should work for Thunderbird but if you have a hard drive that is the same size or bigger than than your current drive you can just clone the current drive.  That's what I do every couple of months.  I use Macrium and have also used AOMEI.  Both fairly easy to use just remember the current drive is the source and the spare is the target.

I got myself in a big muddle yesterday evening when trying to sort out the Thunderbird situation, partly due to the fact that I hadn't realised that the actual Thunderbird profile is stored on my desktop (I had thought it was just an old back-up as it was dated 2017). Am not exactly sure what I did, but Thunderbird stopped working for a while and wouldn't download any new emails. After an hour or so, it just decided to start again all by itself though!

I think that what I probably did when I switched from XP to Windows 7 was to just copy the profile to my external drive - and then I somehow got it to work once Windows 7 was loaded. I cannot remember exactly how I did it though.

Ah, cloning! Me and cloning have a bit of a history on GTG dating back to 2014 when I made lots of unsuccessful attempts (not all my fault, to be fair) to clone XP to my second drive, before finally succeeding. The subject of cloning has always brought a smile to my face ever since though!

I don't think that I would want to clone my current version of Windows 10 at the moment because of its errors. I do however have a clone of Windows 7 on my second hard drive and that has Thunderbird on it. I have checked and that is working okay and the latest emails are there - so if I run into problems reloading them, I always have that to fall back on. Once Windows 10 is sorted out, I was always intending to create a clone of it to replace the one of Windows 7.

I did a bit of tidying of my desktop yesterday with a view to moving some stuff to my external drive. I am not sure what exactly has caused it, but everything started up so much quicker today than it normally does. Long may  it continue!

Just found out there is an option in Settings, Updates & Security, Recovery, Reset This PC: that might be worth trying.

Says it keeps your data.

Just found out there is an option in Settings, Updates & Security, Recovery, Reset This PC: that might be worth trying.

That's strange. After downloading Windows 10 onto the memory stick the other day, I was looking for links about the repair facility you said I should get when I loaded it - and I somehow stumbled upon this reset option. I was debating whether or not to ask you about it, but decided not to. I never imagined that you didn't know about it (not that you should be expected to know, nobody can know everything!). I don't know if anybody else told you about it, but my thanks to them if they did.  :)

I will try this, though not quite sure when. I am in the middle of some family problems involving our daughter at the moment, so didn't get much sleep last night. If I attempted to do anything important on here today, I could well make a billion mistakes!

Well.................

I did the reset thing this afternoon. Looks okay so far: lots of programs etc to reinstall, of course, including my printer. I had a minor panic when I was unable to find the installation CD. Then I found it - but realised I no longer have a working CD/DVD Drive with which to install it (silly me!). So buying an external one will have to be a priority - and meanwhile, I have to log into my clone of Windows 7 on my second hard drive if I want to print anything.

All I have downloaded so far is Firefox and VEW. I ran the latter - and the good new is, I can't see any sign of the profile error so far. However, there do seem to be several other errors. I am not sure if they are just connected with what went on during the reset, or not. Anyway, here are the logs: -

Go to the Printer maker's website.  You can probably download the printer driver if it's not too old.

Doesn't look too bad.  See if you can get FRST and give me the scan logs.

See if you have any yellow flagged drivers:

Right click on Computer and select Manage and then Device Manager then View, Show Hidden Devices.
Now look in the right pane for yellow flagged devices.  Right click on one and select properties then click on the Details tab.
Change Property to Hardware IDs.  Click on the top one then right click and copy.  Paste that into a reply.  Repeat for all yellow flagged devices.

I have a Dell printer. I think I found the software online, but I haven't tried it yet.

I went into Device Manager, but did not see any yellow flags at all.

Here are the FRST results: -

Attached File  FRST.txt   152.27KB   253 downloads

Attached File  Addition.txt   13.85KB   237 downloads

Thanks.

Let's let FRST  run DISM & SFC:

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST

Attached File  fixlist.txt   1.3KB   231 downloads

Run FRST and press Fix  (Will take up to 30 minutes to complete then it will reboot)
A fix log will be generated please post that

Reboot if the fix doesn't reboot it for you

Run FRST again as before.  Make sure Addition.txt is checked and hit Scan.  Post both logs.

Done it. Hope these are complete, Defender kept trying to get rid of FRST again, despite being listed as an exclusion. (UPDATE. Think I have sorted this now)

Attached File  Fixlog.txt   160.43KB   255 downloads

Attached File  FRST.txt   154.32KB   235 downloads

Attached File  Addition.txt   11.63KB   243 downloads

All of the errors showing now are from the same service:

Connected Devices Platform

Doesn't seem to be anything important.  I see a lot of people just disable it to stop the errors and report that they don't notice anything not working.  I saw one guy say it keeps track of something called a timeline which supposedly keeps track of what you do on the PC.  Not sure I like the sound of that.

There are actually three variations on this service but only two show up in services.msc and only one of them let's you disable it.

Let's see what happens if we just disable the one that lets us disable it.

Search for

services.msc

hit Enter

scroll down to Connected Devices Platform Service and right click and select Properties then Change the Startup Service: to Disabled.  OK.

Then reboot and run VEW for System only:

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply
