I have just noticed my Windows update is not working and that I have no windows restore points!  Yesterday I updated some drivers with Driver update and also ran Advanced System Care, then I figured I would also check for windows updates...apparenty, all attempted windows updates since 30.08.2019 are "failed". So this seems to be an older problem....Also, FileHippoAppManager is no working anymore, so I can't update programs automatically (but I read this seems to be a software problem).

I first tried to do a Windows restore (I figured the Driver updates might have messed with my windows updates), but, surprise, there were no restore points. It said "no restore points have been created on your computer's system drive". I saw there was checked "turn off system protection", I cheched to allow for restore points. As I try to create a restore point on my Windows (C:) drive, I receive the message "A volume shadow copy service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the application event log for more information (0x80042302). I checked the services.msc and Volume Shadow Copy was not started, I started it, but windows restore is still not working.

I also tried to run an Avira virus scan. Avira icon showed in the bar, but Avira would not start. So I reinstalled Avira and ran a short check, but it found nothing. I also ran ESET scanner, it may have found something, but it didn't solve the update and restore problems.

Edit: I notice COM+ Event System is disabled. I enable it and restart windows, now windows update is working! As Windows update is running, it also seems that a new restore point is created with the windows update.

My computer seems to be working normally though, there are no slowdowns. If I had not checked for Windows updates, I would still be convinced everything is ok... But I wonder what caused these services to become disabled, maybe it is a virus?

Please help! Thank you!

Hello Kristina,

We can take a look at your hardware and software on these forums but anything malware related is strictly off limits, please see my canned info below regarding certain programs you have running on your computer.

Advanced System Care,

You will not see anything like this recommended on any reputable forum, they are at best a gimmick and at worse a danger to the operating systems registry, it is an old article but the author is still highly respected and tbh Ive not seen it explained better than at the miekiemoes' Blog here

FileHippoAppManager

Other than Windows and your AV protection nothing should be allowed to check for and/or install any updates without you authorising it.

Once Windows has been installed, you install the necessary drivers for the MB and other hardware, install your programs and then leave well alone, drivers and software should not be allowed to auto update and you should never update any driver/s or software unless the updates are intended to resolve a specific issue that you are having, installing new drivers/updates unnecessarily can actually cause you the very issues that any new drivers/updates are intended to resolve and uninstalling the new drivers or updates may not resolve the problem/s that installing the updates have caused.

Depending on priority it can take many months before the driver/software provider releases any fix and they sometimes do not even bother.
