Hello.

I'm having problems with my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Service Pack 1, some tray icons have disappeared but still can see the place where they should be, these are the network, bluetooth and some other icon. Also, I can see the audio icon but it won't do nothing if I click it.

How did  this happen?

Well, I'm having performance problems with this PC (Intel Learning Series mini-laptop) specifically when playing games, the games go slow-normal-slow-normal-slow-normal and so on, they don't run at full lag or full speed, they run like 0,50sec slow then 0,50sec normal *EVEN* at 640x480 with all settings low (This PC's resolution is 1366x768).

I've reinstalled windows several times and still getting the same result. I use Intel's updated drivers (15.33.48.5069) Release Date: May 15, 2019

Then I decided to flash the BIOS, the flash app for Windows didn't work, I think it said the BIOS is newer than the one I wanted to install. Then I shut down the PC and turned back on the next day and that's where I noticed the missing icons.

How do bring back these tray icons?

Edit: Driver details, screenshot

Does it happen with a different user?  Try creating a new user then login as the new user:

https://www.webucato...t-windows-7.cfm

Also let's see if there are any clues in the event logs:

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.  (Each time you run VEW it overwrites the log so copy the first one to a Reply or rename it before running it a second time.)

-The app you provided won't run because "It has not been coded for your language (Spanish)"

-I created a new standard account and logged in, it had all the missing icons, so logged out and back to my account and all the icons were there, then I went to the control panel and deleted the standard account and rebooted the PC, the icons are still there, it looks like it's solved.

Do you have any suggestions about this weird lag issue?

Get Process Explorer

https://live.sysinte...com/procexp.exe

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7+ - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Copy the next 2 lines:

TASKLIST /SVC  > \junk.txt
notepad \junk.txt

Open an Elevated Command Prompt:
Win 7: Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator
Win 8: http://www.eightforu...indows-8-a.html
win 10: http://www.howtogeek...-in-windows-10/

Right click and Paste (or Edit then Paste) and the copied lines should appear.
Hit Enter if notepad does not open.  Copy and paste the text from notepad into a reply.

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...ownload_speccy/

(Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button  - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)
Download, Save and Install it.  Tell it you do not need CCLEANER.    Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving),
File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.
(It will be near the top,  10-20  lines down.) Save the file.  Attach the file to your next post.  Attaching the log is the best option as it is too big for the forum.  Attaching is a multi step process.

First click on More Reply Options
Then scroll down to where you see
Choose File and click on it.  Point it at the file and hit Open.
Now click on Attach this file.

Latency Monitor:

Go to

http://www.resplendence.com/downloads

Scroll down to

System Monitoring Tools

and then find

LatencyMon 6.70 (or it may be a higher number if they update)

Click on Download free home edition

Save it then right click and Run As Admin.  It will install and then start the program.
It will tell you to click on the Start button but there isn't one.
Instead click on the green arrowhead (looks like a Play button).   Let it run for at least 20 seconds.  Then hit the red box to stop it.

Edit, Copy Report text to Clipboard then move to a REPLY and Ctrl + v to paste the text into a reply.

Sorry for the late reply, I had the computer busy. The taskbar icons problem is back, so I logged out and back in,  the icons were there but then a few seconds later some disappeared. I can't run the event viewer program because "It has not been coded for your language (Spanish)

MEASURED INTERRUPT TO USER PROCESS LATENCIES
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The interrupt to process latency reflects the measured interval that a usermode process needed to respond to a hardware request from the moment the interrupt service routine started execution. This includes the scheduling and execution of a DPC routine, the signaling of an event and the waking up of a usermode thread from an idle wait state in response to that event.

Highest measured interrupt to process latency (µs):   21338,864520
Average measured interrupt to process latency (µs):   12,760995

Highest measured interrupt to DPC latency (µs):       453,097434

Hard pagefaults are events that get triggered by making use of virtual memory that is not resident in RAM but backed by a memory mapped file on disk. The process of resolving the hard pagefault requires reading in the memory from disk while the process is interrupted and blocked from execution.

NOTE: some processes were hit by hard pagefaults. If these were programs producing audio, they are likely to interrupt the audio stream resulting in dropouts, clicks and pops. Check the Processes tab to see which programs were hit.

Process with highest pagefault count:                 greenshot.exe

Total number of hard pagefaults                       281
Hard pagefault count of hardest hit process:          138
Number of processes hit:                              9

You have a Seagate HD and it's showing write errors.  Seagates always seem to show some kind of errors but get Seatools from

https://www.seagate....ols-win-master/

and run the extended test.  This will take several hours but if the test passes supposedly the hard drive is good.

I would also run the builtin Memory test:

https://www.howtogee...m-for-problems/

Interrupts is high in Process Explorer which often means a bad driver.

Latency Monitor says there are problems

so rerun Latency monitor, click on the Processes tab and then click on the Hard Pagefaults column header once or twice until the processes with the most pagefaults are at the top.  Then take a screen shot and attach it to a reply.  then click on the Drivers page and click on the DPC Count column header once or twice until Drivers with the most DPC Counts are at the top.  Take a screenshot.

Ok before I go into these tests I've just checked all the drivers in the intel website which I accessed via this link:

https://www.intel.co...ort/detect.html

And the website says all my drivers are updated.

Maybe is there something I can enable/disable in the BIOS setup?

I have never yet seen the intel program do anything so I am not convinced it works.  You have an intermittent problem so it's likely to be Hard drive or Memory related.

Keeping your reply in mind I just uninstalled the intel's driver assistant, it is indeed wasting resources.

Last night in my desperation I did the "Disable CPU throttling" trick, then entered the BIOS setup utility > Advanced tab

There I have these options:

Language
Intel® SpeedStep™ (Enabled by default)
Intel® Turbo Boost Technology (Enabled by default)
C-States (Enabled  by default)

xHCI Mode (I had to disable it days ago because it wouldn't let me install Windows)
EHCI Controller (Enabled)

OS Selection [Windows7] <--This option is grayed

I disabled the "Intel SpeedStep" feature. Then booted Windows and tested the games, there is a significant speed boost in games, the Euro Truck Simulator 2 weird lag decreased, at least it can now be played with the second camera (Outside, no mirrors)

Need For Speed Most Wanted was lagged even at 640x480 with all settings low, now it can be played at 1024x768 with low settings

<This mini-laptop doesn't have a fan cooler, I forgot to mention that.>

Then I downloaded and installed "SeaToolsforWindowsSetup.exe", when it was running I had a BSOD saying something like a process
doing something that would allow someone else access this PC, I think it was 0x07B. I shut it down.

Today I booted MemTest86+ (HBCD) and the test completed with no errors. Then I booted parted magic (From HBCD) and ran Gsmart Control, I choose the extended Self-Test, the test completed with read failure. I attached the report.

Here's some BIOS information:

Phoenix SecureCore Technology

BIOS version: MPBYT10A.86A.0035.2015.0211.1604
BIOS2 version: 1.03.01
EC version: 1.06

Then, like you said, it looks like it's a hard drive problem. What brand do you prefer when you buy hard drives?

Sorry for bringing back to life this old thread, but it's for an update:

A friend of mine managed to get me another motherboard (Same model, Not new) and the extreme lag has considerably reduced. At least I can listen to music and browse the internet at the same time.

The Latency Monitor software still tells me that the system has some trouble handling real-time audio. I think this is due to faulty hardware, the "Side board", which contains the audio out, 1 USB port and the power on button.

Also, the hard drive made a "clack" yesterday and today, it looks like this hard drive is going to die soon and is also causing this tray icon problem, as well as another issue where sometimes the system will not boot, it freezes at the "Starting Windows" screen, but there is no animated logo and the HDD LED is not blinking.

Thanks for the update.  If the hard drive is dying then best to clone it before it fails.

Once again, sorry for the late reply. A friend of mine gave me another hard drive and "side board" (The hard drive is used but working), I installed the hdd on June 22th 2020. I installed Windows Ultimate x64 SP1. The tray icons problem is completely gone. The lag issue (slow-normal-slow-normal) is still around, but not SO aggresive as it used to be. The lag only appears when the laptop is hot, I guess that's normal. I also managed to track down the Windows loading screen freeze: It was my USB mouse. Whenever I encounter this problem this is what I do: Force power off (Hold the power button), unplug the USB mouse and turn it back on. I will continue my research on the lag issue and post back.

For your mouse problem try searching for

device manager

hit Enter

Then click on  the arrow in front of Mice & Other Pointing Devices.

Right click on your mouse and select Properties then Power Management.  Make sure the box in front of Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save power is UNCHECKED, OK

The CPU will slow down in order to protect itself if it gets too hot.  If you don't feel up to the surgery required to clean the heatsink you can use a USB powered fan tray to help cool it.  Sometimes just propping it up in the back (without blocking any vents) will help.  Heat rises so better for it to rise toward the back away from the CPU.
