I have a Canon MX 882.  It is printing letters with "ghosts,"  i.e, there is a shadow on all letters, but ONLY when printing in black.  All the colors I have tried print perfectly.  This occurs regardless of which software I use (Word, WordPerfect, Excel, etc.)

 

Does anyone have a possible solution to this problem?

Off hand I would lead towards either a black cartridge problem or its print head.

What we called ghosting when I was working on printers was usually a print head. It was either worn out or damaged. Worn out is that a lot of printing went through the head and the ink orifaces became to large.

Another possibility is the timing of when the individual ink orifaces get a signal to fire and print.

 

I would 1st try cleaning the print head. I would also try another ink cartridge. Are you using Canon ink and cartridges?

Thanks for the quick reply.  Today I just ordered a cleaning kit for Canon ink jets.  Once I get it and clean the head, I will post the result.

I received a cleaning kit, removed and cleaned the print head, replaced all the ink cartridges and ran the print test and printed a paragraph of a document.  Sadly, the shadow on printing still exists.

 

The grid pattern at the top of the print test is 100% perfect.  The blue, pink and yellow bars seem perfect, but the grey bar at the bottom is two tones.  The bar is 10 mm thick comprised of three bars, the upper and lowest are about 2 mm each and the middle bar is 6 mm and is LIGHTER in color from the upper and lower ones.  What is odd, is that every letter or number that is printed on the page has NO shadow.

 

I also printed the "Head Alignment Value," but I don't understand it.

At this point I would now lean towards either a bad printhead or the component (board?) that controls it.

Maybe try to remove and reinstall the printer or if there is a new driver or software for it.

 

I wouldn't spend a lot of money on it because new printers are cheap.
