Trying to install Microsoft security essentials always fails with error: 0x8004ff91

This had been happening ever since my computer was infected and my firefox browser was hijacked (kept opening up with ads). Infection was clear using malware bytes.

Thanks in advance for any help

MSE will not install if you have another antivirus.  Malwarebytes often installs a trial antivirus good for 2 weeks so you may need to uninstall it.  You can also try installing the free Avast and see if it will work.

https://www.avast.co...ST&locale=en-us

Stick with the free (Basic) version and decline the trials and any optional software like Chrome or Dropbox.  If you get Avast to work then skip the quick scan and have it do a boot-time scan:

Click on the Avast ball.  Then click on Protection, then on Antivirus, then on Other Scans then on Boot-time Scan.  Click on Install Special Definitions.  Click on Run on Next PC Reboot.

Reboot and let it run a scan.  It may take hours.
Once it finishes it should load windows.   Mute your speakers so it doesn't wake you up when Windows boots.

When you reboot you will see the scan start.  It will tell you where it saves its log.  Usually it's C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report\aswBoot.txt but it might change so verify the location.   This is a hidden location so you will need to tell Windows to let you see it:

http://www.howtogeek...-windows-vista/

Copy and paste the text from the log to a Reply when done.

IF all else fails, post your FRST scans:

  • Get FRST from http://www.bleepingc...very-scan-tool/You need to download the appropriate tool for your PC.  If you don't know if you have a 32 or 64 bit system get them both.  Only one will work and that's the right one.
  • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Check the Addition.txt box
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste log back here.
  • It will generate another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

I would delete the two archives that are corrupted:

C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Setup\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AC0F074E4100}\AcroRdrDCUpd1901020098.msp

C:\Windows\Installer\4a0026a9.msp

They seem to be something from Adobe so you may need to reinstall one of your Adobe programs if one of them stops working

Hint with Avast:  Right click on the orange Avast icon down near the clock.  Probably hidden so click on the up arrow to the left of the clock if you don't see it.  Select Silent Mode.

That will stop it from nagging you about paid upgrades and such.  You will need to go back in every month or so and Update, Program to make sure you have the latest version (the definition updates are automatic).

Yes I have deleted those two files.

Well I guess I would have to say good bye for good old MSE, it turns out as of 2020 Microsoft will stop updating it.

Thanks for the recommendation on Avast.
