Hi,

 

I think my cable set top box is being hacked. I bought basic cable through my cable provider and did not purchase the ability to record shows. My cable box is from 2016. I hear a "rev" sound and when I get close to the box, I believe its the hard drive booting up....like its recording something, even though its not. When the cable is "off" (the cable box is still on and tells the time, but the cable is off) I hear this throughout the night...at midnight, again at 3 am, sometimes 4am. If I'm home, I hear it during the day at 10 or 11 am. If the cable is "on", I hear it in a cadence of 2-5 minutes it "revs", 2.5  minutes it stops reving....  all day long into the night or until i shut the cable off, then i will hear it at night as described. If it is being hacked, is there a way I can detect it and possibly detect who might be hacking it?

Cable boxes, Satellite boxes, etc. will often update their software in the early hours of the morning, when demand for the service is low.

 

In any case, we do not have any tools available to analyse such boxes since both their hardware and software are proprietary, and therefore we just don't have sufficient information about them.

 

If you believe you have a problem with your box, then the best advice I can give you is to contact your cable supplier.
