Ok the good people over at Malware appear to have managed to get rid of Avast for me :)

There are still no Windows 10 or Windows Defender updates shown to have been installed, when was the last time that you checked for updates.

 

I do have something in mind for you but would like to have the answer to the above first and then possibly have you do one more check for us.

Morning,

 

Have been trying periodically throughout the process without success. Just tried again and got the same result - can't connect to Windows Update.

I did get a new error when I tried to run the troubleshooter however

Hello Buffyfan

 

One more easy thing to try and then we may have to get serious  :D

 

Download then run the Windows All in One Repair tool from here, disregard the malware guidance but follow the other steps to the letter and in particular ensuring that you first create a new restore point and perform a proper Windows clean boot before running the repair, details for the clean boot here.

 

Just a btw: I am in the UK so it was 21.02pm here when you replied and having to be up at 5am I had just retired for the evening.

Ok, looks like that may finally have sorted  :D   Windows Update now functioning and I've kept updating until it told me I'm up to date
