Hard drive failing?

Best Answer phillpower2 , 09 April 2020 - 08:02 AM

Nothing at all wrong with any of the hardware, no software issues flagged up so Windows 7 no longer being supported and the limited amount of 2GB of RAM are the most likely cause of the issue.... Go to the full post »

I've having a slight performance issue which a friend suggested might be my hard drive on its way out

I'm running Seven on my netbook.

Basically when loading multiple tabs on my browser they are taking longer to load than normal. I've since updated the browser, changed the anti-virus and firewall which has improved it, but it still moves slow. My download speed is fine.

I'm also getting occurances with the PC going into standby when the settings say it shouldn't and occassional sound and video distortion when playing videos.

Any thoughts?

Download and run CrystalDisk info standard edition from here

Run the program, grab any screenshots and attach to your next reply for us.

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... then after typing in any response you have... click on browse...desktop...find the screenshot..select it and click on the upload button...then on the lower left...after it says upload successful...click on add reply like you normally would.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.

You can see for yourself that the HDD is fine hardware wise so any issue/s lay elsewhere.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

  1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
  2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
  3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Nothing at all wrong with any of the hardware, no software issues flagged up so Windows 7 no longer being supported and the limited amount of 2GB of RAM are the most likely cause of the issue.

If not already aware, the integrated graphics solution relies on the system memory for support which reduces the amount available, every tab that you have open consumes RAM and the once highly recommended Avast will be sucking up the RAM as well due to all the unwanted extras that it foists on unsuspecting folk.

Not sure if you had anything else going on in the background when you ran Speccy but 64% of the 2GB was in use at the time.

Physical Memory

Memory Usage: 64 %
Total Physical: 1.99 GB
Available Physical: 715 MB

The only thing that I could see possibly helping here is upgrading to Windows 10 ** and if you plan on keeping the notebook upgrade the HDD.

** You can still do this for free.

I was running a movie to give it a normal load on the computer. I also run Prey on my pc incase it ever gets stolen.

I reinstalled Avast as I didn't like bitdefender blocking websites frequency and then had issues installing other due to guess what... Old avast files left behind.

Thanks for checking btw

One last thing. Could it be a power supply issue?

Avast is a nightmare these days I`m afraid and even more so when trying to get rid of it  :( take a look at the thread here where we had to get the help of icontev over on malware removal to help get rid of it, that`s bordering on ransomware if you ask me,

There is no problem with the power supply and the Windows Power Plan being set to Balanced is what it should be.

To summarise;

The 2GB of slow RAM, Avast and an unsupported OS are the cause of the poor performance.

Best suggestion, upgrade to Windows 10 while it is still free and if keeping the computer upgrade the HDD.

NB: Installing Windows 10 would also mean that you did not need any third party AV as Windows 10 has both AV and a Firewall.

You are welcome btw  :)

You are welcome  :)

Got a suggestion before you go, remember what was said about Avast foisting things on people that they don`t need, uninstall and then reinstall Avast but this time do a custom install so you only install what you need to protect you, follow the steps @ Put Avast Free Antivirus on a diet
