I will be working, usually in Photoshop or Premiere Pro and the computer spontaneously reboots.  Steps taken to alleviate the problem:  Bigger power supply, newer video card, repasting processor, updating Windows.  then at BestBuy, disconnecting possibly problematic other internal hard drives, replacing processor fan, and then replacing heat sync.  Saying RAM tested bad and replacing, also doubling from 16 to 32.  Then shortly after my 5th trip there, testing and labeling each hard drive, I found when I a disconnected hard drive on to do backups with Genie Backup, the drive showed as E:  It was previously F: and the backup will only recognize it as such.  I went to the drive management to change its letter back, but it would not let me scroll down to the drive, or do anything, even close the window.  I used task manager to close but that didn't unfreeze it, nor did rebooting. Each tried multiple times.  I put another J: drive on for a different backup and now it was E:  Keeping that on, I put the F: drive on, and with E: taken it went to F: and I was able to complete 4 backup updates to it.  I wondered why drives were getting E: when the DVD should be that and saw there was no DVD drive in file explorer.  I opened up, thinking BB may have left disconnected but it is.  Now they are no longer available for help with the continuing and added problem.

Multiple Replies are expected.  Just post a log as soon as you get it.

Download BlueScreenView
http://www.nirsoft.n...creen_view.html

Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit, Select All.

Go File, Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

et Process Explorer

https://live.sysinte...com/procexp.exe

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7+ - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Copy the next 2 lines:

TASKLIST /SVC  > \junk.txt
notepad \junk.txt

Open an Elevated Command Prompt:
Win 7: Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator
Win 8: http://www.eightforu...indows-8-a.html
win 10: http://www.howtogeek...-in-windows-10/

Right click and Paste (or Edit then Paste) and the copied lines should appear.
Hit Enter if notepad does not open.  Copy and paste the text from notepad into a reply.

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...ownload_speccy/

(Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button  - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)
Download, Save and Install it.  Tell it you do not need CCLEANER.    Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving),
File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.
(It will be near the top,  10-20  lines down.) Save the file.  Attach the file to your next post.  Attaching the log is the best option as it is too big for the forum.  Attaching is a multi step process.

First click on More Reply Options
Then scroll down to where you see
Choose File and click on it.  Point it at the file and hit Open.
Now click on Attach this file.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

For what it is worth you can not use Ctrl + v in a Command Prompt.  Instead you have to right click and paste or Edit then Paste.  Turns out we don't need the junk file anyway since there are no svchost files causing problems.

When you took the PC to Best Buy did you take your external hard drives too?

Speccy shows three drives have problems (and one is just too hot):

I have highlighted the drive numbers and the problems I see.  I'm guessing that all three of the drives are Seagates.  Not a drive I care for.  Prone to failure and seem to always show bad SMART values.  The last one is running too hot.  Your LaCie seems to be an enclosed USB extension.  If it does not have a fan then you may need to make sure it is  in a well ventilated location (perhaps remove the cover?) and you may need to add a USB powered cooling fan to blow on it.  Hot drives die faster and Seagates are prone to dying anyway.

I presume the SATA II speed shown on both LaCie drives is caused by a USB limitation so probably nothing you can do.  I see you have USB 3.0 on your PC but are you using USB 3.0 cables?

The Command Timeouts are typical of Seagate.  They claim they show a problem with the SATA cables or the power supply but I'm not convinced.  If real they would explain strange freezing and unresponsiveness.

The G-sense numbers are supposed to indicate the drive was dropped.  Again with Seagate you can never be sure.

I would test all three drives with

HD Tune

https://www.lifewire...-review-2624561

Actual download is at:

http://www.hdtune.co.../hdtune_255.exe

Download, Save, right click and Run As Admin.  Select the drive from the drop down menu then Run the Benchmark test and report your min, max & average transfer times.  Ideally the graph would be flat or slightly tilted to the right.  On a bad drive you will see sharp drops.  The fewer programs running at the same time the better.  Pause your anti-virus.

Typical output:

hdtunewd.jpg

The Y drive is getting full.  It's on the border where defragging will stop working.

I would let Windows check all drives:

1. Double-click  Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.  (Start with C: then repeat for the other drives)
2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
4. Check both boxes and then click Start.
You will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?  (You may not get this for drives other than C:)
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, but don't restart yet.

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then the Event Viewer. Next select Windows Logs.  Right click on System and Clear Log, Clear. Repeat for Application. Reboot. The disk check will run and will probably take several hours to finish.

Once you have all drives checked.

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator.  Then type (with an Enter after each line).

sfc /scannow

(SPACE after sfc.  This will check your critical system files. Does this finish without complaint?  IF it says it couldn't fix everything then:

Copy the next two lines:
findstr  /c:"[SR]"  \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log  >  %UserProfile%\desktop\junk.txt
notepad %UserProfile%\desktop\junk.txt

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue.  Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter if notepad does not open.  Copy and paste the text from notepad into a reply.  Close notepad.  Close the Command Window.

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application. (Each time you run VEW it overwrites the log so copy the first one to a Reply or rename it before running it a second time.)

Looking at your WiFi connection.  There is a strong signal on the same channel as you are using (11).  If you have control of the router you should change it to use a different less busy channel.

Download inssider

http://www.techspot....6-inssider.html
Double click to install it. Then run it by right click and Run As Admin.

It will show you a graph in the bottom right that has your signal in blue and competing signals in orange and yellow.  It may also recommend a different channel which might have less interference.

Moving to a different channel (by logging on to your router) can drastically improve performance.

Looking at the Process Explorer log your Interrupts CPU % is a bit too high.  (Should be under 1.4 doesn't sound like much but it is critical)

This usually indicates a bad (poorly written) driver.  Sometimes we can see which one from Latnecy Monitor:

Latency Monitor:

Go to

http://www.resplendence.com/downloads

Scroll down to

System Monitoring Tools

and then find

LatencyMon 6.70 (or it may be a higher number if they update)

Click on Download free home edition

Save it then right click and Run As Admin.  It will install and then start the program.
It will tell you to click on the Start button but there isn't one.
Instead click on the green arrowhead (looks like a Play button).   Let it run for at least 20 seconds.  Then hit the red box to stop it.

Edit, Copy Report text to Clipboard then move to a REPLY and Ctrl + v to paste the text into a reply.

Click on the Drivers Tab.  Click on the column header for "Total execution (ms)" once or twice until the biggest numbers are at the top then take a screen shot and post it.  Click on the Processes tab then click on the column header once or twice until the big numbers are at the top.  Take a screen shot and post it.

Last time I took the y drive, which is my photo archive to Best Buy also.  I am usually using Photoshop Bridge on files when the reboots occur.  There, no problems demonstrated.  Back home I had  reboot.  Because of Covid I was never able to follow up.

It was strange that after doing all those downloads and tests or specs, I had a blue screen.  I can't remember the last time I had one of those - very long time, and unusual.

W and Y are LacIe metal housing drives.  Solid built.  Y once fell 1.5' onto concrete while downloading and no problem was found, when I continued.  X is the main mirror backup to Y.

When you say run as administrator, do you mean sign in as administrator? I am the only user, and all my programs are in a desktop with my name sign in.  If I sign in as administrator, there are almost no programs showing on desktop.  As the only user, am I automatically the adminstrator?

I subsequently moved almost all my remaining video files from the Y drive to a new LaCie 8T, but didn't notice much more room.  surprisingly, as there many hundreds.

So when it says status good, that is not that important.  I had also run Seagates long test on the Y and it passed all.

thanks.  I'll follow up.

I probably used the cords that came with the drives.  How do USB 3 differ?

Could the router channel be busy because I have 2 roommates sharing the router?'

With Win 10 you have to right click on a file and select Run As Administrator even if you have admin rights.  It's part of their security stuff to make it harder for hackers to take over your computer.

When you log in as the normally hidden Administrator it is considered a separate user and you get a new clean desktop.  (If you open File Explorer and go to C:\Users\r1\desktop you will find the files that are usually on your desktop) You probably don't have to right click and Run As Admin when you are the hidden Administrator.

Status Good is bogus.  I have seen drives with over a thousand sectors pending  reallocation claiming Status Good.

However if the extended Seagate test passes then supposedly the drive is OK.

USB 3.0 cables should have SS on them and usually have a blue insert.  You would think if they came with the drive that they would be 3.0 but who knows.

The metal housings may not be the best design based on the temps we are seeing.  They might need a little fan or some cooling fins or some more holes in the case to keep the drives below 50 C.

If you have had another blue screen please rerun BlueScreenView.

If the crashes only happen when using Photoshop Bridge there may be a problem with the program.  Do you have the latest version?

In the Search box type:  dxdiag

wait for it to find it.  Right click on dxdiag.exe and Run As Admin.
Yes
Once it finishes (green line in bottom left goes away)

Save All Information.  Point it at your desktop and it should save it as dxdiag.txt.

Exit

Double click on dxdiag.txt and copy and paste the text into a reply.

This is a Win 7 computer.  I have Photoshop CS6 and latest CC on the computer.  CC is so bug ridden that I often need to go to CS6.  I have also had reboots in Photoshop Premiere Pro.  These are all the programs with huge numbers of files, or very large ones, maybe taxing the system

Something else that never used to happen though, is in my audio program Cubase, where playing a file, sometime the sound stops while the marker line proceeds normally through the song.

Here is the DXdiag:

That was scary.  The y: photo archive was not showing on the PC, blue light not coming on.  Unplugged the USB several times and nothing.  Put on the ASUS laptop and blue light and files are there.  Put back on PC and OK again.

Did you get all of the dxdiag.txt?  On mine there is a section after EVR Power called Diagnostics but I have Win 10 so it may be different. DxDiag says it can't see your audio so you may have a problem with your audio program.  Perhaps a reinstall might help.

It might be useful to make a process explorer log when you have photoshop open to see if it is using too much memory or cpu.

Also Let's try Latency Monitor:

Go to

http://www.resplendence.com/downloads

The drops you have are probably from some process getting in the way.  Perhaps the anti-virus or WMI.  Usually a bad drive looks a lot worse.  If you want to you can do an error scan but it takes a while.
