On Start Up I see blue screen, no icons and this friendly message:

A fatal error in IE has occurred at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM <01> + 00010e36 error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

System can not function in normal mode please check security settings

Scan your PC with any available antivirus/spyware remover to fix the problem

I realize this topic has been addressed before. I have read multiple threads on this and they all seem to be able to 1) connect to the internet and 2) view files/folders. I can do neither even when running from safe mode. Please help me with this first baby step to get this resolved.

Kc,

I guess that is my first problem. How do I install and run hjt without icons to guide me through?

Hi bahiablanca

Please RIGHT-CLICK here and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Metallica’s reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Now run Metallica’s reg file

Reboot as normal

Post a hjt.log

Kc,

I am viewing this on another computer. The one with the problem shows only BSOD, no task bar, no start menu, no icons... and more importantly right now, no ineternet explorer. Any ideas as to how i can get a basic level of function so as to follow your first step above?

Thanks for your patience,

Blanca

Kc,

In safe mode I see a black screen w/ a title MICROSOFT ® XP ® (build 2600), and "safe mode" in each corner nothing else. I have tried clicking on the top and draging this screen out of the way but it does not appear to be a window. It fills out the entire screen. On pressing <ctl><alt><dlt> I do get a window and it runs:

Tskmgr.exe, administrator
svchost.exe, local service
svchost.exe, network service
svchost.exe, system
lsass, system
services, system
winlogon, system
csrss, system
smss, system
system, system
system Idle Process, system

When starting windows normally, I get a completely blue screen, no task bar no start menu, no desktop and the following text:

A fatal error in IE has occurred at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM <01> + 00010e36 error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

System can not function in normal mode please check security settings

Scan your PC with any available antivirus/spyware remover to fix the problem

Also here i have attempted to move this screen out of the way by clicking and dragging but it is not working

The processes running under this logon are:

Tskmgr.exe
wuauclt,exe
wdfmgr.exe, system
alg.exe, local service
spoolsv.exe, system
svchost.exe, local service
svchost.exe, network service
svchost.exe, system
svchost.exe, system
lsass, system
services, system
winlogon, system
csrss, system
smss, system
system, system
system Idle Process, system

Please let me somewhere out of this sad state of affairs that I am in.

Thanks,

Bahiablanca

Hi bahiablanca

The annoying message on your desktop is kind of hard to get rid of when you don't know how.
Click on the upper edge of the screen and drag it down untill you notice a cross in the upper right corner. Click it to close the screen and you will have access to your real desktop and can change the settings.
It is a modified explorer screen laid between your desktop and the shortcuts on it. Easy once you know.

boot in to safemode

Click Ctrl+ Alt+ Delete
Now select Applications > New Task > Browse > Change to file's > find Metallica’s.reg then press OK

You can also run the file from a floppy Disc.
