PC Constantly Freezes & won't do anything (Resolved).

Ok, so just over a week now & no issues running as is, i think i can now say my issue is fixed. Thank you very much Phil, i don't know how else to thank you than just to say it, your help... Go to the full post »

I've posted this in hardware as I suspect thats what it is.

 

Dell Inspiron 3650 Desktop - W10

 

PC working fine until Dell done a BIOS update a while ago then PC would not switch on, i replaced motherboard (all i could get was one from china)

 

The PC now turns on, can go for days without freezing but that's rare, usually takes a few seconds, minutes & if i'm lucky i get an hour.

 

I've done a PC reset & that's all - i'm not great with these things so hopefully someone can suggest something for me please?

 

Oh & i changed a hard disc as it seemed to fail a the same time, it was making a weird noise, this deffo helped but the problem is still there. An SSD is my main drive & a conventional one is my 2nd disc, it's the one that came with the PC from Dell so it should have a windows image on it

If the computer is a desktop can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

 

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s. 

 

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

1.    In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

2.    In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box

 

 

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;

List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply for us.

We can see a few things going on but will address the one that could be causing the shut downs first.

 

There are both weak and high voltages showing which would explain the behaviour, no way should Dell have shipped these computers with an add on GPU but only a 240W PSU and a cheap Chinese one at that.

 

Suggestion, try removing the add on video card from the motherboard and connecting your screen to the appropriate video port on the MB, reassemble, power up, test then post back with an update for us.

Yes this is the PSU that was supplied with the PC, i know very little about hardware or software TBH but i'm pretty certain aftermarket higher powered ones are nigh on impossible to find, same with the motherboard.

 

I havent altered it from the way it came when i bought it

 

Ps. I had 2 frozen screens even trying to reply to this topic, that's before i took the graphics card out

How have things been since you removed the GPU.

 

Not sure what the info is below your PS, can I ask that you only post what is asked for, things can get confusing otherwise, thanks.

Ok, sorry i thought you wanted all the same info again from both programmes.

 

It's running fine so far, but it may take days before it freezes again. It's a good sign so far though. Do the voltages seem more normal now in your opinion?

 

Do i heed to replace the GPU? My PC is mainly used for internet & storing photographs on.

Voltages still look off but that could be Dell software and Speccy not getting on

See how things go for a couple of days and if you can manage using just the onboard video don`t replace anything, 240W is enough without the add on GPU.

Just a quick update, it's freezing when trying to run the Dell Diagnostic tool, i'm starting to think my processor is fried?

 

When i rang the ever so helpful Dell people after the BIOS update goofed my PC up they mentioned, i think, a voltage surge may have damaged my motherboard? Could have affected the processor too maybe & as said i replaced a hard drive too.

 

I'll try the diagnostic tool again

It froze again on the Dell tool, both times at the 'Fixed Transformation and Lighting Test', 48% & 44%

Three possible causes, drivers, weak graphics solution, weak PSU.

 

Easiest to do first, create a new system restore point, download and install the Intel UHD Graphics Driver from here re run the Dell diagnostic tool but this time just test the graphics.

 

When you post back with an update, can you also let us know if the power on button has been blinking at all.

I've created a restore point as per the attached screenshot, it just allowed me to create it for 1 hard drive

 

I then went download the Intel UHD Graphics Driver but it won't let me install it. A notepad txt file appeared which i have attached - sorry if this is extra information but i thought you needed to know

I ran the video card test anyway & it froze at 8.41
