Lenovo P400 Ideapad touch will not boot and other upgrade problems.

I am working on my sister's P400 that was running Windows 8.1 64bit and has 8 gb ram.  She wanted me to upgrade it to Win 10.  Before I did the move I cleaned it up and ran scans like Malwarebytes and all seemed clean but VERY, Very slow.  It took 2 days of working to even get it to boot and then 2 days of task manager .  I tuned off most startup programs etc. but it was still slow.  I finally made progress and wanted to boot a cd of tools to do a memtest but it never would boot to a cd.  I then put in a usb flash drive and it stated the the current security settings was blocking it. Never could make progress on the upgrade so I elected to do the One key rescue recovery.  It took 26 hours to complete and it still would not boot.  The boot manager comes up with only 2 boot setups (ip4 and ip6) netwok boot. At one time I was able to get into bios and the cd was not listed as a boot device.  I am now wondering what I can do.  I was able to do a chkdsk on the drive and it showed no errors.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Long time no hear geno368,

Do you know if anyone has ever set a Supervisor password, if they have and it has been forgotten there is no option other than to take the notebook to a Lenovo service centre I`m afraid as Lenovo will not help you with anything password related online.

Thanks for the reply Phil...I checked that when I was able to access bios and there was no password set.

I have just been able to start a new Windows 10 install and I will reply back to you when I make some progress.  It is going very slow so I am not sure it will be a success.

A slow install could be the signs of a bad HDD so fingers crossed for you.

You are welcome btw  :)

Edit to add: If you get Windows and the Lenovo system drivers to install ok please see the below which will show us if the HDD has issues;

Download and run CrystalDisk info standard edition from here

Run the program, grab any screenshots and attach to your next reply for us.

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... then after typing in any response you have... click on browse...desktop...find the screenshot..select it and click on the upload button...then on the lower left...after it says upload successful...click on add reply like you normally would.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.

Thanks, again...

It ran all night and when I went to bed it was at 49% downloading files.  It never finished and below is what was on the screen this morning:

EFI network 0 for IPv4 boot failed.

"Default boot device missing or boot failed.  Insert recovery media and hit any key, then select boot manager to chose new boot device or to boot new recovery media."

This shows up constantly.  I suspected a bad drive earlier and was able to do a chkdsk /r /f a few days ago and all seemed fine (no errors)

I don't know what to do next except replace the HD...do you agree?

Hello geno368,

The EFI network 0 for IPv4 boot failed message has me wondering if something has gone wrong during the install as in during one of the times that the computer has to restart.

Have you been able to check that the drive is listed in the BIOS.

Not sure if you have read it already but see thread here and "how to" here

Hello and thanks again...

Last night I replaced the hard drive, made a new iso for build 1803 on a cd and was able to install the os.  That is as far as I have gone so far.  The install went perfect. I am going to check if I need a bios flash and then I will update to build 1909.

I will update you upon completion...

Wouldn`t recommend updating the BIOS unless it is needed tbh.

Bios only need updates if it is required for a particular function you would need. An update can fail in a heartbeat and your board will be trash.
