After several hours, Firefox, Chrome, VPN will not connect with internet, Edge has no problem. Restart clears problem, for a few hours. Have disable Malwarebytes, no help. All updates done. ffc scannow-no help. No error messages from any program. Have deleted recent installations of programs.

OS win 10-build 18363 X-64 on Dell Inspiron 660, 8GB ram. Task manager shows low CPU and Memory.

Thanks for help.

Hello dansaab,

Try resetting the dns settings as shown in the link below for windows 10.

https://www.ivpn.net...S-settings.html

Then follow instructions for flushing the dns cache.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Zep,

i've done that, changed to 8888-8844, flushed cache. No help there. Have also had MB scan for rootkit-nothing. VPN reports it cannot connect with the internet, but Edge can.

Thanks.

Hi Zep

PC will not boot into safe mode using restart options through settings. I get to choosing #5 after first restart, system restarts to the login screen where it asks for a password, but the pc is lo longer active--no mouse, no keyboard lights. I tap the power button and pc shuts itself off. Another press of the button restarts the system and it boots as usual. I tried to get into safe mode on normal restart, but it rebooted to normal status.

???

Try this an see if Chrome or Firefox connects, here's what one user said

In my case unchecking "Automatically detect settings" in "Local Area Network(LAN) Settings" fixed the problem.

Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings.

This worked for another user with very similar issue. Lets see if it does anything for you. Not sure whats going on with safe mode. I just wanted to see if you could get a connection in Safe mode.  That pretty much assures a firewall or Anti virus program isn't inferring but I think you checked all that.

I suppose you have seen the information in link below:

The setting for "automatically detect settings" was not checked. The article on VPN and Chrome seems to not apply, Vpn won't connect, either. When the problem occurred at least one time, vpn was running already, but I could not disconnect from it; at other times vpn was not running when nothing but Edge could access the internet.

I'm beginning to think that there is a major disruption in the core of win 10 that might not be fixable.
