Xp pro shows no desktop after logon

I have a laptop that boots to the logon screen then after a successful logon opens to windows explorer. There is no desktop and if I close the explorer window I am unable to do anything except open taskmanager. I get the same response in safe mode. Can anyone give me some advice.
